TONIGHT: The Mudcats begin a six game road trip tonight with game one of a four game series versus the Salem Red Sox at Haley Toyota Field in Salem, VA. Tonight's game is the first of 11 meetings between the two teams this season.
ICYMI: Weston Wilson hit a solo home run in the fourth, Dallas Carroll went 3-for-4 with a RBI, Devin Hairston had two hits and Nathan Rodriguez went 2-for-4 while also driving in one as the Mudcats defeated Buies Creek 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
STARTING OFF: RHP Devin Williams has the start for the Mudcats in tonight's opener in Salem against the Red Sox. Williams is currently 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA over three starts so far this season for the Mudcats. He has also totaled 12 strikeouts, two walks and a .286 average against over 6.2 innings pitched. Williams is limited to approximately 45 pitches, or three innings per outing as he continues to build his arm strength after missing all of last season due to injury (Tommy John surgery). He last pitched on June 21 in Buies Creek where he suffered his second straight loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits over two innings pitched. He gave up a two-out, two-run single in the first and then saw two unearned runs come across with help of a dropped catch at the plate from catcher Mario Feliciano. Williams also walked one and struck out four his last time out.
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.77), tied for 2nd in wins (7) and 1st in innings pitched (81.1)... RHP Braden Webb is currently tied for 8th in the CL in strikeouts (66), 5th among CL starters in lowest batting average against (.225) and 4th in highest SO/9ip ratio (9.74)... INF Tucker Neuhaus (95) leads CL hitters in most strikeouts... RHP Luke Barker is currently tied for the CL lead in games (24) and tied for 3rd in saves (7). Barker is also 2nd among CL relievers in lowest batting average (.157), 4th in lowest BB-IBB/9ip ratio (2.21) and 1st in fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (7.12).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is batting a CL low .237 (.670 OPS) with runners on base. The Mudcats are also last in the CL when batting with runners in scoring position (.241, .704 OPS) and (tied for) last in the CL when batting with RISP/2-outs (.222, .673 OPS) this season.
PITCHERS OF LATE: Since June 3, the Carolina bullpen has combined to go 4-1-5 with a 2.42 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 67.0 innings pitched... The Carolina starting rotation, meanwhile, is 5-9 with a 4.31 ERA over their last 19 games (since June 3) and 96.0 innings pitched (65 strikeouts, 38 walks).
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 148 more strikeouts than hits (706 SO, 558 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently tied for the 3rd largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently just 27-34 in games against Southern Division opponents and own a Carolina League low .443 winning percentage in games against their own division this season. Carolina, however, is currently 9-4 in games versus the Northern Division this season... CAR vs. FRE: 2-1, vs. LYN: 2-1, .vs WIL: 5-2.
JUNE GLOOM: Carolina is collectively batting a Carolina League worst .203 in June. They also own a -11 run differential and have averaged just 3.46 runs per game since June 1 and since Keston Hiura was promoted to Double-A.

ALUMNI REPORT: The Atlanta Braves selected the contract of RHP Evan Phillips (2016) on Sunday. Phillips, a native of Clayton, NC, was a mid-season All-Star with the Mudcats in 2016 and went 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA over 21 appearances with Carolina (28.1 IP, 8 BB, 38 SO) before a promotion to Double-A.
