SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox had a late rally but couldn't come up with a fourth consecutive comeback victory, falling just a bit short as they took a 5-4 loss to the Carolina Mudcats Tuesday night at Haley Toyota Field.

Salem (3-2, 35-38) held their opponents scoreless after the fourth inning, but their offense couldn't put together the push necessary to claim victory. The Mudcats (3-2, 37-38) battled back from an early deficit of their own, winning their second straight. It was the first of 11 regular season games in 2018 between the two clubs, all in the second half of the season.

The Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Mudcats starter Devin Williams (ND), who surrendered a leadoff single to Santiago Espinal before Espinal stole second base. Following a line-out to right by Brett Netzer, Chatham singled to right, scoring Espinal, and swiped second himself. Bobby Dalbec earned a walk, putting runners at first and second with one away. Jerry Downs hit a fly to deep left that Joantgel Segovia caught, but Chatham sped to third. Dalbec broke for second on a delay, and third baseman Dallas Carroll threw the ball away into center, with Chatham racing home on the miscue. With two outs, Tyler Hill singled through the middle, scoring Dalbec and running the lead to 3-0.

Carolina answered in the top of the second against Salem starting pitcher Jake Thompson (L, 3-6). Weston Wilson worked a one-out walk, and scooted to second on a single by Dustin Houle. Cooper Hummel slashed a double to right, scoring Wilson and moving Houle to third base. Ryan Aguilar then cracked a double to right, scoring both Houle and Hummel. Devin Hairston fanned, but Segovia clicked a single through the middle to plate Aguilar and give Carolina a 4-3 lead.

The Mudcats tacked on another in the top of the third. Leadoff man Demi Orimoloye hit a swinging bunt to the left side that Thompson fielded cleanly, but his throw to first was errant, skittering past Jerry Downs, and Orimoloye zipped to third base. With one out, Wilson hit a soft groundout to first that let Orimoloye come home, extending the lead to 5-3.

After they were stifled over five innings by piggyback starter Conor Harber (W, 3-3), Salem edged closer in the bottom of the eighth against Carolina reliever Nattino Diplan (H, 3), who walked Hill with one away. Chris Madera struck out swinging, but Trenton Kemp hit a grounder deep in the hole at third. Carroll fielded the ball and fired wildly to first; Kemp beat the ball for a single, and as the ball trickled away in foul territory, Kemp hustled to second and Hill raced home to trim the lead to 5-4. However, new reliever Luke Barker (S, 8) fanned Jordan Procyshen to end the inning, and set down the Red Sox in order in the ninth to end the game.

Thompson was touched up for five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks in five innings, striking out two. Jared Oliver threw two scoreless innings, fanning three against a single and a hit batter. Jake Cosart tossed two shutout frames of his own, working around a hit and two walks.

The Sox will try to rebound Wednesday night, with righty Tanner Houck taking the ball for Salem against Carolina righty Braden Webb. First pitch at Haley Toyota Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
