SEA DOGS FALL TO RICHMOND FRIDAY NIGHT - The Portland Sea Dogs fell 6-1 to the Richmond Flying Squirrels last night. Shane Matheny brought in Frankling Labour with a one-out single, putting the Flying Squirrels in the lead, 1-0 in the third inning. In the fourth, Michael Gigliotti launched a three-run home run over the wall in right, clearing the bases, and expanding Richmond's lead to 4-0. Portland fought back in the top of the fifth inning against Richmond starter Kai-Wei Teng. Tyreque Reed worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kole Cottam and Nick Sogard earned back-to-back walks to load the bases. Tyler Dearden hit a grounder to second where Richmond second baseman Brett Auerbach made an error, scoring Reed and cutting the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Matheny led off with a walk, putting a runner on base for Frankie Tostado, who homered to right. It was his 10th homer of the year, adding to Richmond's advantage, 6-1.

HELD TO TWO HITS - Kai-Wei Teng worked into the seventh inning for Richmond without allowing a hit. The Sea Dogs were able to notch their first hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Reed singled. After one more out, Teng's night would be done, holding the Sea Dogs to one unearned run over 6.1 innings. Kole Cottam recorded his 10th double in the year after Teng was pulled for the second hit of the game for the Sea Dogs.

POWER OUTAGE - The Sea Dogs have the fewest amount of home runs in the Eastern League. They have 47 long balls this season while Richmond has the second-most amount with 88, while Somerset leads the way with 90. Richmond has the second-lowest batting average in the Eastern League, hitting .229.

PITCHER'S BEST FRIEND - Portland has turned 60 double plays this year and has a .977 fielding percentage. Their 60 double plays is the second-highest in the Eastern League behind the Hartford Yard Goats who have turned 69.

RAFAELA SITS AMONG BIG LEAGUERS - Ceddanne Rafaela continues to make noise at every level this season and now is now second among all levels, including Major League Baseball, with 42 extra base hits. Rafael Devers (Boston Red Sox) currently leads the way with 43 extra base hits.

THOMPSON REMAINS DOMINANT - RHP Jake Thompson tossed another perfect inning Thursday night, extending his shutout streak to nine games. During this streak, he has made nine appearances pitching 15.1 innings allowing six hits while walking six and striking out 15.

TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO PORTLAND - Prior to last night's game, the Red Sox have promoted infielder Alex Binelas and catcher Stephen Scott. Binelas is ranked as the No. 17 prospect for Boston, according to Baseball America. He has hit .245 with 10 doubles, 14 HR and 43 RBI through 58 games with A+ Greenville to begin 2022. Scott was hitting .188 through 37 games with A+ Greenville with 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 14 RBI.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 25, 2011: Bobby Jenks made a MLB rehab start for Portland, but the Fisher Cats cruised by the 'Dogs 9-5 in Manchester. Jenks worked one inning, allowing a hit and fanned one. Chih-Hsien Chiang blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning off Robert Ray.

PITCHING MATCHUP - LHP Chris Murphy will take the mound tonight for Portland. He last pitched June 19th at Reading and tossed 5.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Murphy gave up one home run.
