Portland Sea Dogs News Release


BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN The Sea Dogs held on to the early lead last night en route to a 7-5 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies last night. Portland put up four runs in the top of the first to take the early lead. A bases-loaded wild pitch brought Ceddanne Rafaela in to score before Chase Meidroth hit an RBI single to score Nick Yorke. A two-RBI double from Matthew Lugo (15) capped off the inning to put Portland up 4-0. A solo home run from Joe Suozzi put Binghamton on the board in the bottom of the second. An RBI single from Suozzi along with an RBI groundout from Hayden Senger in the bottom of the fourth plated two but Portland led, 4-3. Corey Rosier hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth to score Niko Kavadas and extend the 5-3 lead. Rosier recorded a sacrifice fly to score Phillip Sikes in the top of the seventh as Portland doubled the lead. Binghamton brought a run across in the bottom of the eighth after an RBI double from Wyatt Young. A sacrifice fly from Rosier scored Kavadas in the top of the ninth and Portland led, 7-4. Brandon McIlwain hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth but Portland held on, 7-5.

MEIDROTH'S STREAK CONTINUES Chase Meidroth is currently riding a 21 game on base streak, the longest on base streak by a Sea Dog this season. Dating back to May 16, he is batting .288 with three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI. He has drawn 14 walks and has struck out 14 times. Meidroth also has swiped two bases.

SEA DOGS KEEP ON RUNNING Last night, the Sea Dogs stole six bases as they continue to lead Double-A in stolen bases. Corey Rosier, Ceddanne Rafaela and Phillip Sikes all swiped two bases against the Rumble Ponies.

SEA DOGS STRUGGLE AGAINST LEFTIES Portland is hitting .257 against right-handed pitchers this season, but their average dips to .205 against left-handed pitchers. Out of 60 home runs, only seven have come against southpaws. Corey Rosier has the best average against lefties and is hitting .321 while Nathan Hickey (.083) and Niko Kavadas (.093) have the lowest averages.

WHERE DO WE STAND With a win last night, the Sea Dogs are now just 0.5 games behind the first place Somerset Patriots. The New Hampshire Fisher Cats are in third place, 5.0 games behind Somerset while the Binghamton Rumble Ponies remain in fourth place, 7.0 games out of first place.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY May 17, 2018 - Portland rallied from a 7-0 deficit in Altoona, and held on for a 12-9 win in 10-innings. The 'Dogs scored four unearned runs in the ninth to take a 9-7 lead but Altoona tied the game in their half of the ninth. Luke Tendler provided the game-winning hit with a two-out, three-run homer. Pitcher Trevor Kelley became the first Sea Dog as a Red Sox affiliate to hit.

ON THE MOUND RHP Brian Van Belle will take the mound tonight for the Sea Dogs. He last pitched on June 11th against Akron. He tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs (both unearned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out seven. The eight hits was a season-high. Van Belle has gone 6.0+ innings in each of his last six starts dating back to May 9th against the Somerset Patriots.
