Last time out...
The Schaumburg Boomers (15-9) shut the door early on the Joliet Slammers (12-12), capturing a 9-1 victory on Wednesday at Silver Cross Field. Six runs in the first three innings allowed the Boomers to put the game away early. An RBI double by Frank Pfister and during the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Nick Kuroczko in the second inning fueled the Boomers' offense early. Chad Mozingo had a busy day at the plate, collecting two extra-base hits, including a home run. The Boomers relied on Robbie Penny to eat up innings en route to the win. Penny pitched seven innings, allowed one earned run, six hits and two walks while striking out four. Eric Binder was charged with his second loss of the year. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed four runs. Joliet's lone run came on a Kyle Maunus fielder's choice to score David Fox. The Boomers took the series two games to one.For Starters...
Tommy "The Barber" Mendoza is coming off a no-decision against the London Rippers on June 9 in Ontario. He went six innings, scattering eight hits, giving up three runs while walking one and striking out four. Mendoza is still looking for his first win in the month of June after recording a record of 2-0 in May. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
So we meet again...
The Slammers and the Rascals squared off in the 2011 Frontier League Championship Series. Joliet took the series three games to one with tonight's starter Tommy Mendoza winning game two in O'Fallon, going five innings, giving up only one run on five hits.
Give me some relief!
In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 47 IP in June, they have a 4.60 ERA.
Almost the same as last year...
The Slammers currently sit at 12-12, the exact same record they had after 24 games in 2011. After 24 games last year, Joliet was two games out of first. This year they sit three games out of first.
Abel is able...
Abel Nieves has hit safely in all but two of the games he's played in this season. His 10 multi-hit games are tops on the team. Nieves leads the Slammers in batting average (.403), hits (31), total bases (38), OBP (.484), SLG (.494) and OPS (.977).
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 2-9 in games when they make an error. They are 10-3 in games when they do not.
Out-hit...
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 10-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 1-8.
Movin' on up!
RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Diamondbacks on May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
Transaction Wire...
The Slammers released RHP Eric Binder and RHP Seth Hobbs today. They signed LHP Mike Gaffigan and RHP Tyler Ware today.
