Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers held the River City Rascals at bay, despite an eighth inning comeback, to take game one of the three-game series 6-5 against the Western Division powerhouse.

Joliet got started in the first inning when Abel Nieves and Hector Pellot reached on singles, and with one away, Erik Lis put the ball in play and the Rascals committed an error, bringing Nieves home to make it 1-0. River City took the 2-1 lead in the home half on a pair of RBI singles from Charlie Lisk and Jason Patton.

Joliet quickly rebounded in the second with a pair of their own. Zach Mandelblatt led off with a single, and Kyle Maunus reached on an error. Sean Estand then notched a single, and on a throwing error, Mandelblatt scored to tie the game. They re-took the 3-2 lead on a Ben Hewett groundout when Maunus sprinted home when the ball was put in play.

The Slammers held the one-run lead until the seventh where they piled on with three more. Joliet loaded the bases with two outs, and Mandelblatt drew a walk to pick up the insurance run. Jimmy Waters knocked a two-RBI double deep into the outfield and brought home Pellot and David Fox, making it 6-2.

River City mounted a comeback in the eighth and nearly tied it up. Two of the first three hitters reached base to put runners on the corners. Josh Workman then sent a two-run double into the gap, followed by a Jeremy Synan single, giving the game its final 6-5 score.

Tommy Mendoza earned the win through seven innings on just two runs. Brian Smith struggled in the eighth, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning, before Amalio Diaz notched the save. Kelii Zablan was stuck with the loss for the Rascals.

The Slammers continue their road swing with the Rascals Friday night at 7:05 in game two. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse calling the action, online at www.wjol.com.
