Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Nick Neidert pitched a career-high eight innings for a second straight start, and his team scored four seventh-inning runs to rally from a 5-2 deficit for a 6-5 road win over the Mobile BayBears to snap a nine-game losing streak in the finale of a four-game series at Hank Aaron Stadium Saturday night.
The Jumbo Shrimp (4-12 second half, 32-52 overall) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Mobile right-hander Jose Rodriguez walked third baseman Brian Schales, and catcher Sharif Othman hit an RBI double to left field. Shortstop Chris Diaz put down a sacrifice, before left fielder Brian Miller hit an RBI triple to center field to make it 2-0.
The BayBears (9-6, 46-37) got one run in the bottom of the fourth inning against Neidert (8-5). Catcher Jack Kruger hit a one-out single to right field and scored on designated hitter Jared Walsh's RBI double to center field. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Neidert walked first baseman Jose Rojas, and left fielder Zach Gibbons reached on a Schales error. Right fielder Brandon Sandoval singled to load the bases, and a Neidert pitch hit second baseman Luis Rengifo to tie the game, 2-2. After Neidert stuck out center fielder Brennon Lund, Kruger grounded to Chris Diaz, who threw to second baseman Isan Diaz for a force out, but the latter's errant throw to first base allowed two runs to score. Walsh then hit another RBI double to center field to make it 5-2. Neidert allowed five runs - one earned - on nine hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.
Mobile right-hander Samil De Los Santos began the pivotal top of the seventh inning by walking Isan Diaz, and first baseman Peter O'Brien drilled his 10th home run to left-center field to cut the lead to 5-4. Right-hander Zac Ryan (0-1) entered and walked designated hitter Eric Jagielo. Right fielder John Norwood doubled to left field and went to third base when a pitch got past Kruger but Jagielo was caught in a rundown. Schales walked, and Othman hit a one-out, game-tying double to right field that put Schales at third base. Ryan's wild pitch scored Schales to give Jacksonville a 6-5 lead. After that, Neidert did not allow the tying run into scoring position in the seventh or eighth innings. Left-hander Dylan Lee allowed a ninth-inning, one-out walk but struck out the last two batters of ninth inning to finish the win with his first save.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp return home to begin a nine-game homestand with the opener of a four-game series against Chattanooga at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. Gates open at 5 p.m., when families can play catch on the field, followed by player autographs as part of Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday presented by Wolfson Children's Hospital Rehab. Kids activities will be in the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Zone, and following the game, kids 12 and under can run the bases.
