Knoxville Smokies News Release
JACKSON, TN - The Smokies swept a doubleheader with the Generals on Saturday night, winning 1-0 and 3-1, respectively. Tennessee used solid outings from their starting pitchers to get the sweep.
In the first game, Zack Short doubled to left field with one out in the fourth inning to put a runner in scoring position. Tennessee scored the game's only run when Trent Giambrone doubled to left field, scoring Short and making it 1-0 Smokies. Giambrone now has 11 hits in his last ten games. Will Remillard also had a double in the third inning to round out the Smokies offense.
Keegan Thompson earned the win as Tennessee's starting pitcher, throwing 5.0 scoreless innings. Thompson allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two. Wyatt Short pitched the final 2.0 innings, earning his first save of the season by giving up two hits and two walks in the shutout effort. Short added one strikeout as well.
Daury Torrez got the start for the Smokies in game two of doubleheader in his first appearance since returning to Double-A. Torrez pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks. He also struck out two in the outing. Torrez was relieved by James Buckelew, who made his first appearance of the season with the Smokies. Buckelew threw one scoreless inning while striking out two.
Down 1-0, the Smokies rallied in the top of the fourth. Two walks and a double by Jesse Hodges loaded the bases for the pitcher, Torrez. Torrez came through as he grounded out but scored a run to make it 1-1. In the seventh, after a Connor Myers leadoff single and a stolen base, Vimael Machin reached on a throwing error and Myers scored to make it 2-1 Smokies. Jeffrey Baez followed with a single and Giambrone added a single of his own, which drove in Machin to give Tennessee a 3-1 advantage.
Zach Hedges replaced Buckelew in the bottom of the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings of his own and picked up the win. It was Hedges' fourth win of the season as he did not allow a hit in his outing.
The Smokies will be back home starting on Sunday at Smokies Park. Tennessee and Montgomery are scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. for game one of the series. Duncan Robinson is the projected starter for the Smokies as he looks for win number six. Robinson was recently named the pitcher of the month in the Cubs organization. The Biscuits will counter with Benton Moss.
