Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (46-40) were defeated by the South Division-leading Pensacola Blue Wahoos (42-42), 3-2, on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Pensacola starter Vladimir Gutierrez (6-8) stymied Montgomery's offense, allowing just one run over seven innings.
The Blue Wahoos did not need much offense during the Biscuits' Christmas in July celebration. Second baseman Mitch Nay blasted his fourth Double-A home run in the first inning off Montgomery starting pitcher Sam McWilliams (3-5).
While the 22-year old right-hander settled down after the initial strike, Pensacola went up 2-0 on an RBI-groundout from TJ Friedl in the fifth before plating a third run on a McWilliams' wild pitch two innings later.
Despite McWilliams' quality start of 6.2 innings, Gutierrez kept the Biscuits' bats silent. Montgomery was unable to record a hit until the bottom of the sixth as Jake Cronenworth singled. Although the shortstop scored on an RBI-groundout by Peter Maris, Gutierrez stranded a runner on third with two outs.
With run support, Gutierrez concluded his night with a scoreless seventh inning before being relieved by Jesus Reyes. The Biscuits had success off of Reyes, pulling within one score on a Maris eighth-inning sacrifice fly. However, the Pensacola reliever retired five of the next six batters he faced, clinching the series win.
Montgomery begins a nine-game road trip as they travel to Kodak, Tenn., for a four-game set with the Tennessee Smokies Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The Biscuits will start J.D. Martin (5-9) while Tennessee is projected to start Duncan Robinson (5-1).
