Tennessee Stifles Generals Bats in Double-Header

Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, dropped a doubleheader to the North Division rival Tennessee Smokies on Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 3-1. The consecutive defeats put Jackson (45-40, 6-10 Second Half) alone in fourth place, while Tennessee (47-39, 11-5 Second Half) vaults to the top of the North.
In the opener, Taylor Widener showed why he is one of the Arizona organization's top pitching prospects, striking out a season-high 13 Smokies in a three-hit, complete game effort. Unluckily for him, two of the hits were back-to-back fourth inning doubles by Zack Short and Trent Giambrone, plating the lone run of the game. The Smokies' Keegan Thompson and Wyatt Short out-dueled Widener, combining over the seven-inning contest to shut out the Generals, who were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
In the nightcap, the Smokies combined three singles and a critical infield throwing error to break a seventh-inning tie and push across the tie-breaking runs. Connor Myers opened the inning against right-hander Yoan Lopez by singling to right and stealing second base. When Vimael Machin grounded to Flores, the first baseman's toss eluded Lopez for a two-base error, and Myers scored on the play. Later in the inning, Trent Giambrone's RBI single plated an insurance run for Tennessee. On a night when Generals pitchers Taylor Widener, Wei-Chieh Huang, Bud Jeter and Lopez struck out 23 Smokies in 14 innings, the offense was punch-less, mustering ten hits in the two games but going 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
