Last time out.
The Slammers lost the series finale 5-2 against the Rockford RiverHawks Monday night, marking the third straight series Joliet has dropped. Rockford jumped ahead with pairs of runs in the first and second innings. In the first, with the leadoff man aboard, Evan Button doubled into left field, followed by another run-scoring double by Javier Herrera, making it 2-0. An inning later, Michael Thomas scored off a wild pickoff throw, and Button brought home Ted Obregon to make it a four-run ballgame. Joliet finally came to life in the eighth inning. Entering the game as a pinch hitter Chretien Matz launched a solo home run, and with the bases loaded, Erik Lis punched a sacrifice fly into the outfield, putting the tally at 4-2. The Hawks added another run in the bottom of the inning on a sac fly of their own. Steven Maxwell was stuck with the loss on a four-run performance through six innings.
For Starters.
Jake Renshaw makes his fifth start of the season tonight for the Slammers. He is coming off a loss to Southern Illinois on June 28 as he went five innings, giving up four runs, three earned, in a 7-4 defeat for the Slammers. The right-handed pitcher developed a loyal following among the Slammers' faithful in 2011 as Joliet flew a pirate flag every time he started at Silver Cross Field. The "Captain's" home starts featured pirate themed sound effects and video board slides every time he struck a hitter out. Renshaw won his final seven starts of the regular season, finishing with a Frontier League best 13 victories. He was also extremely consistent last year for Joliet, never lasting fewer than five innings in the regular season. Renshaw tallied four complete games on the season, tying for third most in the league. He was a workhorse, leading the Slammers with 128 innings pitched. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The right-hander put up excellent numbers in 2010 in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.
Freedom Follies.
The Slammers went 0-6 against the Freedom in 2011. Florence is the only team Joliet has not beaten in the Frontier League.
Lefties.
The Slammers are 7-4 when they face a left-handed starting pitcher, compared to 11-20 against right-handers.
Down but not out.
The Slammers are a season-high nine games out of first place but they are only six games out of the final playoff spot. The two division winners and the teams with the next two best records regardless of their division will make the playoffs.
Walks and K's.
Slammers second baseman Hector Pellot leads the club in walks (27) and is tied with Erik Lis for the team lead in strike outs (29).
Error indicator.
The Slammers are 4-18 in games when they make an error. They are 14-6 in games when they do not.
Out-hit.
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 15-5, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-18.
Transaction Wire.
Joliet placed INF Kyle Maunus on the 7-Day DL today. Yesterday they announced they'd acquired Catcher Matt Mirabal from the Normal CornBelters in exchange for Catcher Trey Manz.
