
Miners Start Series on Right Foot

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners ended a three game losing streak with a win over the River City Rascals 8-4. Cody Hall earned his second win of the season as he pitched 5.2 innings, gave up five hits, allowed three runs, walked three and struck out three.
The Rascals scored first off Miners starter Cody Hall in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Southern Illinois came right back in the bottom of the second as Jake Kaase hit a sacrifice fly off Rascals starter Adam Worthington to bring in Darian Sandford who led the bottom of the first with a triple. Ken Gregory extended his hitting streak to 15 games as he brought in a run with a RBI double to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.
The Miners added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Rascals reliever Doug Shields as Darian Sandford hit an inside the park home run to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. Then Chad Maddox hit a two run home run to score Jake Kaase, who singled, to give the Miners a 5-1 lead.
The Rascals scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning off Cody Hall to make it a 5-3 game. The Miners added another run off Doug Shields to make it a 6-3 game when Chad Maddox hit a sacrifice fly to score Cannon Lester. The Miners added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to take a 8-3 lead. River City added another run in the top of the eighth inning off Miners reliever Ryan Quigley to make it a 8-4 game. The Miners would go on and win the game 8-4.
Ross Davis tossed 1.1 innings, walked two and struck out one. Gabriel Shaw pitched the ninth and only gave up one hit. The Miners improve to 25-18 with the win. River City falls to 24-19. The Miners and Rascals play game two of the three game set tomorrow night at 7:05 pm.
