Rockford RiverHawks News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington starter Gary Lee took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and outdueled Rockford's Mike Lee as the Wild Things won, 3-0, at Consol Energy Park.
Gary Lee lost the no-hit bid on Mike Thomas' one-out single in the eighth inning, but got the win. Lee, who hadn't pitched since June 21 because of the birth of his daughter, combined with two relievers on the shutout. Lee (3-3), who left after Thomas' hit, struck out four and walked two in an 86-pitch start. Steven Grife gave up a two-out single to Javier Herrera in the ninth, but got his fifth save.
The RiverHawks lost for the first time in Mike Lee's six starts since he was moved from closer to the rotation. Lee (3-1) gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits. Lee struck out seven, including five straight in the fourth and fifth innings, and walked two.
Washington scored an unearned run in the second inning. Rick Devereaux led off with a double to left-center field. Rockford first baseman Evan Button made a leaping grab of Jonathan Erb's liner, but threw wildly in an effort to double Devereaux off of second base and Devereaux took third. Tyler Oldham singled him home.
Lee retired 12 straight from the fourth through seventh innings. Will Arnold broke up the string with a leadoff single in the eighth. Lee left after Matt McConnell reached on a one-out error. Arnold scored on a Doug Thennis single off Mickey Cassidy and McConnell scored on a wild pitch by Andrew Armstrong.
Rockford had just four runners reach base and none advanced beyond second.
The series continues at 6:05 p.m. CDT Wednesday.
The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Friday to play Gateway. OSF St. Anthony sponsors postgame fireworks.
