WEDNESDAY'S LOSS - The Sea Dogs dropped the second game of a six-game series to the Somerset Patriots 5-1 last night. Portland opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Elih Marrero worked a one-out walk, while Christian Koss singled and advanced to second on the throw, putting runners at second and third. Izzy Wilson lifted a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Marrero, giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. The Patriots responded in the top of the second inning. Jeisson Rosario led off with a base hit and took second on a wild pitch. Jesus Bastidas grounded out, moving Rosario to third. Mickey Gasper doubled to the left-center gap, plating Rosario, tying the game 1-1. Somerset took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh. Gasper singled and Chad Bell walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and in the next at-bat, Gasper scored on a second wild pitch, giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead. Two more runs came around to score in the top of the eighth inning. Brandon Lockridge singled, while Rosario and Bastidas walked to load the bases. Gasper pushed in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Bell brought in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly, increasing their advantage to 4-1. The Patriots tallied one more run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Bastidas, adding to their lead, 5-1. The Sea Dogs went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, snapping their eight-game winning streak with the 5-1 loss.
SECOND HALF POWER-UP - Portland hitters mashed 50 home runs during the first half of Eastern League play this season, landing them last in the league for round-trippers. To start the second half, the Sea Dogs have led the way in terms of power numbers, launching 22 homers over the first 14 games. Home runs helped fuel their eight-game winning streak, hitting 17 of their 22 this half during the streak.
HAMILTON EXTENDS STREAK - David Hamilton has brought his on-base streak to eight games. Dating back to July 3, Hamilton has gone 8-for-30 (.267) with two doubles, two home runs, five walks, and three strikeouts while tallying a .405 on-base percentage. While on base, Hamilton has stolen four bags and scored nine runs over the last eight games.
FOLLOW THE LEADER - With an 11-3 start, the Sea Dogs sit alone in first place. They lead all teams by at least 14 runs with their 36-run differential, with the closest being Erie who has outscored their opponents by 22 runs in the second half. Overall, Portland has driven in 103 runs in the last 14 games. The Sea Dogs are maintaining a 2.0 game lead over the Reading Fightin Phils who are sitting in second place in the Northeast Division.
STREAK STOPPED - With a loss on Wednesday to the Patriots, the Sea Dogs said goodbye to their eight- game winning streak. Portland compiled eight consecutive wins from July 3 to July 12, putting their offense on showcase throughout. During the streak, the Sea Dogs hit .287 as a team (84-for-293) with 17 home runs, 69 RBI, 35 walks compared to 65 strikeouts, and a team on-base percentage of .369.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 14, 2004 - Portland scored its largest ninth-inning comeback in franchise history, scoring 6 runs in the ninth inning and once in the 10th to shock Altoona. The Sea Dogs allowed 5 home runs and 5 doubles in the first 9 innings - a franchise-record 10 extra base hits allowed (also Altoona franchise records for home runs and extra-base hits in a game) - to fall behind 7-1 entering the ninth inning.
PITCHING MATCHUP - Right-hander Dylan Spacke is set to make his fourth start of the season. All three of Spacke's previous starts came in May, which has been his best month of the season so far. In May, he racked up a 1.50 ERA, tossing 12.0 innings, striking out 10, and walking five. In starts this year, Spacke has yet to record a decision but has excelled, posting a 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings pitched, allowing just one run on 10 hits while walking two and striking out nine. Spacke has been up and down since then. His first half of the season consisted of a 2.42 ERA with an 0-2 record over 22.1 innings and nine appearances from April 10 to May 27. His last nine appearances have led to a 1-1 record, 11.81 ERA over 16.0 innings, and 11 walks with 15 strikeouts.
