
Sea Dogs Fall to Patriots 8-2 Thursday Afternoon

Portland, Maine - The pitching staff struck out 10 batters, led by five from Joan Martinez, as the Portland Sea Dogs (11-4, 41-43) dropped the second game of a six-game series to the Somerset Patriots (8-7, 52-32) by a score of 8-2 on Thursday at Hadlock Field.
Four runs came around to score for the Patriots in the top of the second inning against Sea Dogs starter Dylan Spacke. Jesus Bastidas led off with a double and Blake Perkins drove him in with a two-bagger of his own, giving Somerset a 1-0 lead. One out later, Michael Beltre singled, plating Perkins to increase their lead to 2-0. Max Burt cleared the bases with a two-run homer, capping off a four-run inning with a 4-0 lead.
Somerset drove in two more runs in the top of the fourth with Portland reliever Zach Bryant on the mound. Beltre led off the inning with a solo homer, making it a 5-0 game. Two outs later, Anthony Volpe collected a solo shot, adding to their score, 6-0.
The Sea Dogs broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with Patriots starter Luis Medina on the bump. Tyler Dearden and Ricardo Cubillan both connected with one-out base hits, putting runners on first and third. Alex Binelas scored Dearden on a single, making it a 6-1 score. Christian Koss came through with a two-out RBI single, bringing in Cubillan, cutting into Somerset's lead, 6-2.
The Patriots added even more to their lead in the eighth inning with Perkins' first homer of the night, bumping their lead up to 7-2. Perkins went deep again in the top of the ninth inning, expanding the lead to 8-2. Portland couldn't get any offense going in the bottom of the ninth, falling to Somerset 8-2.
Medina (3-3, 3.63 ERA) worked through 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out three in his third win of the year. Spacke (1-4, 6.75 ERA) tossed 3.0 innings, surrendering four runs on six hits while walking two in his fourth loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Patriots play the fourth game of a six-game series on Friday with a 6:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Portland sends RHP Bryan Mata (0-0, 0.79 ERA) to the mound against Somerset RHP Mitch Spence (3-4, 5.09 ERA).
