Akron RubberDucks News Release
The Bowie Baysox hit six home runs in two games to sweep a Thursday night doubleheader over the Akron RubberDucks, 2-0 and 9-1, taking the first three games of a six-game series at Prince George's Stadium.
Turning Point
Bowie second baseman Connor Norby broke a scoreless tie in Game 1 with a third-inning solo home run off Akron right-hander Tanner Bibee, and he later took Bibee deep in the sixth inning to make it 2-0. In Game 2, the Baysox loaded the bases in the third inning against right-hander Luis Oviedo, and a throwing error by shortstop Brayan Rocchio scored two runs for a 2-1 Bowie lead. Bowie scored seven runs on four homers in the next two innings.
Mound Presence
In his second Double-A start, Bibee pitched Akron's first complete game this season, working six innings and facing three batters over the minimum. He yielded four hits - including Norby's two homers - and one walk, striking out six. In Game 2, Oviedo stranded five runners in the first two innings before allowing two unearned runs in the third and departing after allowing four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Right-hander Kyle Marman allowed fourth-inning homers to designated hitter Colton Cowser and left fielder Greg Cullen. Right-hander Thomas Ponticelli allowed two-run homers to center fielder Zach Watson and Cowser in the fifth. Right-hander Cade Smith fanned three in 1 1/3 innings.
Duck Tales
Against rehabbing Baltimore Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish in Game 1, Akron's only baserunners came in the third inning, as center fielder Chris Roller reached on an error, and left fielder Julian Escobedo singled to center field, sending Roller to third. Escobedo was caught stealing, and Bradish stranded Roller at third base. In Game 2, Rocchio hit a first-inning, one-out solo homer off right-hander Noah Denoyer - the fifth second-half home run for Rocchio. Akron put seven more runners on base without scoring off Denoyer (four innings), Jake Prizina (1 2/3) and Griffin McLarty (1 1/3).
