Last time out...
The Freedom used outstanding pitching from Chuck Weaver, Pete Levitt, Ethan Gibbons and Ed Kohout to defeat the Schaumburg Boomers by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at Boomers Stadium. Florence took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning as Ozzy Gonzalez doubled home Justin Harris and Steve Carrillo singled in Gonzalez. The Boomers rallied for two in the sixth as TJ Bennett singled in two runs with two outs. Knotted at two, the Freedom took the lead for good in the eighth as Zac Mitchell singled in Daniel Fraga. Pete Levitt got the final two outs of the seventh after a runner reached third against Weaver to get the win. Ethan Gibbons worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, aided by a spectacular play in the hole by Carrillo at third to get the final out. Then Ed Kohout earned his eighth save of the year with a perfect ninth. Kohout struck out a pair of batters in the frame.
For Starters...
Ryan Davis makes his second start of the season tonight for the Freedom and his fourth overall appearance. He started in his Freedom debut against Washington on June 25, taking the loss as he went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits in a 4-2 defeat for Florence. His last two outings have been out of the bullpen, most recently on July 4 against River City where he went one inning of shutout ball, walking two and allowing one hit. Davis pitched at D-II LeMoyne College where he posted a career ERA of 3.28 over four seasons with 207 strikeouts in 225 innings. Opponents only hit .241 against Davis during his collegiate career. He finished up school this season and pitched in the PECOS League for the Roswell Invaders, posting a 4-0 record with a 2.42 ERA in five starts, earning a spot on the PECOS League All-Star team.
Catching up...
Freedom catcher Gaby Juarbe is a Frontier League All-Star with a .333 batting average, a pair of home runs and 17 RBI. But Freedom catcher Ozzy Gonzalez, a rookie out of Bellevue University, is also starting to produce for Florence. Here's the situation...
Collins Cuthrell is hitting .424 in 33 at bats with runners in scoring position.
Five or more runs...
When the Freedom score five or more runs in a game they have a record of 17-3 in 2015.
After six innings...
The Freedom hold a record of 20-6 so far this season when tied or leading after six innings of play.
How the west is being won...
The Freedom have a record of 13-12 against the Frontier League West Division. Unfortunately, Florence plays in the East Division. In 2015 they have a record of 9-15 against East Division teams.
Benchmark...
Florence was 21-28 last year at the All-Star break. They have 22 wins so far with two games left before the 2015 break.
Road Warriors...
The Freedom are 9-10 on the road so far this season but they've won three consecutive road series (over Lake Erie, Windy City and Rockford) after winning a total of only two road series in 2014. A win tonight would secure their fourth straight road series win.
Hey now, you're an All-Star!
Gaby Juarbe will start at catcher for the East Division in the Frontier League All-Star Game on July 15 in Schaumburg. INF Daniel Fraga and INF Sam Eberle were also voted onto the team. East Division manager Dan Rohn selected Freedom hitting coach AJ Cicconi to join the All-Star staff.
