O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (25-23) matched a season-high in runs scored, defeating the Gateway Grizzlies (16-32) 16-2 on Friday, July 10 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
3B Taylor Ard led the Rascals offense with three homeruns and six RBI. He blasted two of his shots in the nine-run second inning and now leads the Frontier League with 16. Ard will participate in the Frontier League Homerun Derby over the All-Star Break.
The Rascals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when LF Brian Hansen doubled and scored on a double by DH Danny Canela.
The Rascals set a season-high with nine runs in the second inning. Ard led off with a solo shot. SS Johnny Morales followed with a double, and 1B Zach Kometani walked. RF Jackson Slaid then hit an RBI single to centerfield. Following a groundout, Hansen singled to load the bases, and 2B Hector Crespo hit a two-run single. After an error loaded the bases again, C Josh Ludy singled in two runs. Ard then hit his second homerun of the inning, a three-run bomb.
The Rascals brought home three more runs in both the fourth and fifth inning. Crespo was hit by a pitch, and Canela singled to begin the fourth. Ludy singled home Crespo, and then Ard hit a two-run homer, his third of the night. Then in the fifth frame, Slaid hit a leadoff double, and Redal singled. Hansen drove home Slaid with a double, Crespo hit an RBI single, and Canela had an RBI groundout.
Gateway scored its two runs in the eighth inning. Madison doubled and scored on a single by Ben Waldrip. Following a walk, Seth Heck brought home another run on a two-out single.
RHP Tim Koons (7-0) earned the victory and stayed undefeated this season. Coming off of his first career complete game, he surrendered just one earned run, two total, over 7.2 innings against Gateway. He allowed eighth hits, two walks, and struck out four batters. RHP Heith Hatfield tossed 0.1 inning of relief, and RHP Clay Smith added 1.0 scoreless frame.
Grizzlies starter Vincent Molesky (L, 3-3) surrendered nine runs on eight hits and a walk over just 1.1 inning. Dakota Smith ceded four runs and four hits in 2.2 innings of relief, and Jordan Spencer gave up three runs in 3.0 innings.
The Rascals and Gateway Grizzlies continue their weekend series on Saturday, July 11 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
