Pitching and Power Hitting Lead to Slammers Win over Miners

Joliet, IL- A pair of home runs and great pitching play a major role in the Joliet Slammers (22-28) win over the Southern Illinois Miners (31-19) on Saturday night.

The Miners found the scoreboard first in their half of the second inning when 2B Frank Martinez and 1B Jerrud Sabourin reached against pitcher Adam Panayotovich, who was making his first professional start. DH Joe Rapp grounded into a double play, but on the paly Martinez scored to make it 1-0 visitors.

The Slammers tied the score in their half of the second against Jon Klein. DH Hunter Ridge led off with a double. C John Cannon followed with a single. 2B Max Casper attempted a squeeze play that resulted in Ridge being out at the plate. Charlie White would pick his team up with a two-out hit to score Cannon making it a 1-1 game after two.

Joliet took the lead in the fourth inning. With one out, RF Casey Fletcher cranked a home run over the short, right-field fence. His second bomb of the year put Joliet up 2-1 after the fourth.

The Slammers added two runs to their lead in the fifth inning. 1B Nate Roberts led off with a walk and with pitcher Brandon Cowen in, SS Alfredo Rodriguez singled. 3B Mike Garza walked and with one out to load the bases, and DH Hunter Ridge did the same to bring a run across. With the bases loaded RF Casey Fletcher grounded into fielder's choice, bringing a run home to put the Slammers up 4-1.

The Miners quickly tied the game in the sixth. Former Slammers' second basemen, 3B Adrian English, singled to lead off the inning. Catcher Eric Strano cracked a base-knock to put runners at the corners. A sacrifice fly from CF Aaron Gates scored English. RF Michael Early walked to load the bases. With two outs and David Kubiak in, 2B Frank Martinez singled to drive in Strano. A ground ball from 1B Steve Sabourin got through the legs of 1B Nate Roberts, allowing a run to come across. Kubiak escaped the inning with strikeout and the score tied at 4-4.

Roberts would make up for his error in the bottom of the sixth. After White led off with a single, Roberts crushed a home run to right. His fourth long ball of the year gave the Slammers a 6-4 lead. Rodriguez would later score on an RBI single by Phil Bates, giving the Slammers a 7-4 lead after six.

That was all the scoring the Joliet pen would need. David Kubiak tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth while closer Navery Moore threw a perfect ninth to earn his tenth save of the year, preserving the Slammers 7-4 win. David Kubiak (5-3) earned the win, but Adam Panayotovich tossed 5 1/3 innings in his first professional start, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three. He earned Merchants and Manufacturers' Bank Player of the Game Honors. The Slammers go for the series win on Sunday.
