OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION PUTS PORTLAND ON TOP - The Portland Sea Dogs beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 15-4 last night at Hadlock Field. Portland scored multiple runs in four of the eight innings, including a four-run seventh and five-run eighth inning. Portland started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Stephen Scott and David Hamilton singled, putting runners on the corners. Hamilton stole second base and Wil Dalton hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Scott, and handing the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead. Hamilton scored on a balk by New Hampshire pitcher Yosver Zulueta, increasing the lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth Christian Koss smacked an RBI single, expanding Portland's to 3-1. Scott led off the fifth with a double and Hamilton collected a base knock. Dalton grounded into another fielder's choice, scoring Scott again to make it a 4-2 lead. The Sea Dogs added two more runs in the sixth with back-to-back solo homers from Koss and Tyreque Reed, bringing the lead to 6-2. Portland erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dalton, Nick Sogard, and Alex Binelas all walked to load the bases. Ceddanne Rafeala drove in the first run with a base hit, a fielding error by Rafael Lantigua brought in the second run, while Tyreque Reed drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single to right, extending Portland's lead to 10-3. The Sea Dogs offense went right back to work in the bottom of the eighth, starting with a three-run blast by Binelas. Koss came through with his second homer of the night, and Zach Bryant locked down the ninth inning, securing a 15-3 Portland win.
COME SALE AWAY - Chris Sale was dominant in his rehab start for the Sea Dogs. He tossed 4.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven. He threw 52 pitches, 36 for strikes.
OUT SCORING - With the 15-4 victory last night, the Sea Dogs are outscoring the Fisher Cats 26-13 in the series. Portland has the second-best run differential in the early part of the second half in the Eastern League. The Bowie Baysox (Southwest Division) lead the way with a +27 differential while the Hartford Yard Goats are third with +10.
HAMILTON DOMINATES - David Hamilton is having the best series at the plate for Portland. In the three games so far, he is 8-for-11 with five runs, a double, triple and three RBI. He has also drawn two walks and stolen two bases. Hamilton now has 28 stolen bases which ranks second in the Eastern League behind Anthony Volpe (Somerset/NYY) who has 30.
NEVER TOO EARLY - After the first three games of the second half, the Sea Dogs are 3-0 and are currently in first place in the Northeast Division. The Hartford Yard Goats and Reading Fightin Phils are tied for second place, 1.0 game behind Portland.
BOOK IS CLOSED ON JUNE - The Sea Dogs finished the month of June 11-15, but 3-6 at Hadlock Field. As a team Portland was hitting .238 while holding opposing hitters to a .214 average. Portland blasted 22 homers and had a OBP of .324. Pedro Castellanos had the best month, hitting .358 with 10 doubles, one home run and nine RBI which earned him a promotion to AAA Worcester.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 1, 2019 - Bobby Dalbec hit two homers and drove in three runs, leading the Sea Dogs to a 7-1 win over the Trenton Thunder. Tanner Houck fired seven innings, allowing just one unearned run to earn his eighth win of the season.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy will take the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight. He last pitched June 24th at Richmond and allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. He gave up one homer. He has not faced the Fisher Cats yet this season.
