Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (June 28, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning behind the outstanding pitching of Scott Kuzminsky on Sunday. The Blasters were able to tie the score in the sixth and ride the bat of Jesus Solorzano in the next two frames to take four of the five games between the two clubs. The Wingnuts stranded 11 base runners and did all of their scoring in a pair of one-run frames as they dropped a 6-2 decision.

Scott Kuzminsky (2-2) of the Wingnuts and Matt Swilley of the Blasters each made it through the opposing lineup one time without any damage. It was the second time through the order that Wichita (19-16) did the first damage. With one out, Joash Brodin was hit by a pitch from Swilley and quickly stole second. A fielder's choice roller by T.J. Mittelstaedt moved Brodin to third base. He scored on John Nester's ground rule double over the wall in center field.

Kuzminsky carried that lead into the sixth inning before Joplin (21-12) evened the score. Gabe Suarez, the last batter in the Blasters lineup, drove a double into the right field corner to begin the inning. He was bunted to third and came in to score on a two out single by Yasser Gomez that slithered over the mound and through the middle to make the score 1-1.

Kuzminsky started the seventh inning with the score still tied, but could not finish it. He walked Omar Luna to begin the frame and then committed a throwing error on Mitch Glasser's sacrifice bunt that left runners on the corners with nobody out. The final batter the starter would face, Jesus Solorzano, ripped a triple that scored both runners and gave Joplin a 3-1 advantage. Daniel Bennett entered from the bullpen and recorded two outs without the runner ever moving from third. Frankie Reed replaced Bennett on the hill to face the switch-hitting Mesa and got him to chop a ball towards third. The ball was gloved by Mittelstaedt, but bobbled on the transfer and the error allowed Solorzano to add another run to the Blasters total.

Wichita climbed a run closer when Jayce Ray brought in a run with his seventh inning single, but Joplin answered with a two-run double by Solorzano in the top of the eighth to extend the margin to 6-2. The Wingnuts stranded a pair of runners in the ninth against closer Winston Abreu who picked up a two-inning save.

The Wingnuts begin a six-game road trip on Monday night in Sioux Falls. Recently re-acquired RHP Omar Bencomo (3-0) will take the hill for the Wingnuts against the Canaries.
