
Blasters Road Win Streak Ends in Wichita

Wichita, KS-The Blasters built a five-run lead before it all evaporated with three big innings by the Wingnuts in a 16-8 loss Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The defeat for Joplin (20-12) ended its season-high six-game road winning streak. Wichita (19-15) was staked to an early lead with a three-run first. With one out, Luis Hernandez doubled into the left field corner. David Espinosa then walked and Matt Padgett drove in the game's first two runs with a double to the wall in right-center. Taylor Oldham made it 3-0 with a bloop base hit to left that brought in Padgett.
The Blasters responded with two runs in each of the next four innings. Jake Taylor started a two-out rally in the second with a single to left-center. Jesus Solorzano kept it going with a walk. Gabe Suarez made it 3-1 on a liner to right. After Maikol Gonzalez walked, Oscar Mesa singled on the infield for a 3-2 game. In the third, another two-out spark gave Joplin its first lead of the night. Mitch Glasser was hit by a pitch and Jake Taylor followed with a two-run home run lined over the fence in the left field corner for a 4-3 lead. It was Taylor's fifth dinger of the season. An RBI triple by Mesa and a sacrifice fly out from Yenier Bello pushed the lead to 6-3. In the fifth, Glasser doubled into the right field corner leading off. One out later, Jesus Solorzano singled to left. A sac fly by Suarez scored the first run of the inning, and Maikol Gonzalez made it 8-3 with an RBI double deep into the left field gap.
Wichita kept its crooked number theme going in the bottom of the fifth. David Espinosa walked to lead off the inning. Matt Padgett followed with a single. Joash Brodin walked to load the bases. After a Joplin pitching change, T.J. Mittelstaedt walked to drive in a run. Following a 5-to-2 fielder's choice, Brent Dean doubled into the left field corner and cleared the bases to make it 8-7. Tyler Coughenour then spanked a double that tied it.
The Wingnuts took the lead for good in the seventh. Brent Dean singled to start it. A sacrifice bunt moved Dean to second. Jayce Ray singled to center and gave Wichita the lead at 9-8. Luis Hernandez singled. David Espinosa walked and then Matt Padgett walked to drive in a run. They made it 11-8 on another bases loaded walk of T.J. Mittelstaedt. A five-run bottom of the eighth for the Wingnuts finished off the night.
Reliever Alex Boshers posted the win for Wichita. Boshers (1-0) went two-and-a-third and gave up just one hit with two strikeouts. Jake Negrete suffered the loss for Joplin. Negrete (0-1) pitched two-and-a-third and allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Luis Hernandez, Matt Padgett, and Brent Dean all had three-hit games. Hernandez had one RBI with three runs scored. Padgett drove in four and scored once. Dean collected three RBIs with three runs. T.J. Mittelstaedt also went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run. For the Blasters, Maikol Gonzalez and Jake Taylor each had three hits in defeat. Gonzalez drove in one and scored one. Taylor posted two RBIs with two runs. Oscar Mesa finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Joplin continues its nine-game, eight-day road swing through Wichita and Laredo with the series finale against the Wingnuts Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:05.
