Joliet Sweeps Schaumburg in Sunday Slugfest

(Schaumburg, IL) - The Joliet Slammers (30-42) defeated the Schaumburg Boomers (41-31) in an entertaining 11-6 offensive show Sunday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.

With the win the Slammers swept the series from the Boomers and finished the season series tied six games apiece with Schaumburg. It's Joliet's first sweep of a series since May 29-31 when the Slammers swept the Lake Erie Crushers in Avon, Ohio. For the Slammers it's also their first winning streak of three games or more since their season-high five game winning streak that occurred May 29-June 2.

The 17 hits the Slammers recorded were the most in one game for the team this season. It all started in the top of the second when David Christensen took Schaumburg starter Alex Rivers deep to give the Slammers a 1-0 lead.

But the Boomers responded in the bottom of the second against Joliet starter Tommy Mendoza. With one away Nate Baumann singled. He would steal second base and Drew Heithoff singled him to third. Christensen bobbled the ball in right field, allowing Baumann tos score on the play to tie the game at one. Heithoff advanced to second on a balk and scored on a two-out RBI single from Jereme Milons.

Schaumburg extended their lead to 3-1 in the third. Frank Pfister started the inning with a single. Steve McQuail walked and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out. Baumann singled him the middle to drive in Pfister but McQuail was thrown out at the plate by Patrick Norris.

Josh Lyon had a big day at the plate for the Slammers. With David Fox on first and two outs in the top of the fourth, Lyon took Rivers deep to tie the game at three.

The Boomers would chase Mendoza from the game in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Valadez doubled to lead-off the frame. A Milons single advanced him to third and a Karexon Sanchez fielder's choice scored Valadez to put Schaumburg up 4-3. Sean Mahley followed with a double and the Slammers brought in Chase Doremus. Doremus left both runners stranded when he got Pfister to pop out and McQuail to line out to end the inning.

Joliet took the lead for good in the sixth against Schaumburg reliever Jason Braun. With one out Kyle Maunus doubled and David Fox singled him home to tie the game at four. Fox advanced to second on the throw home. The Slammers had replaced Eric McGee at catcher with Lyon who had started the game at DH so the pitcher Doremus batted for himself and bunted Fox to third. With two down it was Lyon coming up huge with a RBI single to score Fox and give Joliet the 5-4 lead.

They got some insurance in the top of the seventh. With one away Abel Nieves and Erik Lis smacked back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Christensen was hit by the pitch to load the bases for Maunus. Maunus singled home Nieves and Fox followed with a RBI single to score Lis and it was 7-4 Joliet. They'd add another run when a wild pitch scored Christensen.

The insurance runs proved useful because in the bottom of the seventh the Boomers got two of the runs back on a two-run home run from McQuail.

Leading by only two runs, the Slammers turned to their All-Star closer Amalio Diaz with two outs and runners at the corners in the eighth. The Boomers had their best hitter in Frank Pfister at the plate and Diaz struck him out to end the inning.

Things got a bit bizarre in the top of the ninth. Erik Lis started the inning with a ground rule double. Two outs later the Boomers elected to intentionally walk Fox to get to Diaz. Diaz had never had a professional plate appearance as he stepped to the plate to face the Boomers All-Star closer Patrick Mincey. Diaz legged out an infield single to load the bases. With a full count and the runners going Lyon drove in two more runs with an infield single of his own to make it 10-6 Slammers. Norris reached on a Pfister error that allowed Diaz to score the game's final run.

Doremus (2-1) went two and a third scoreless innings to pick up the win while Braun (4-1) took the loss for Schaumburg. Diaz notched his 18 th save of the season in a game that lasted just over four hours.

Joliet has a much-needed off day on Monday before returning to action Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. as they take on the Frontier League Road Warriors. It's the first game of a six-game homestand and the Slammers are giving out a Spikes garden gnome courtesy of the Will County Health Department's "Get the Lead Out" campaign to the first 1000 fans through the gates.
