Miners Fall in Finale at Wuerfel Park

Traverse City, MI - The Miners fell to an early 7-0 deficit as the Traverse City Beach Bums after two innings and ultimately lost 10-3 to drop 42-30 on the season. The Miners trail Traverse City by three games with the loss and Brian Fowler earned his seventh loss of the season. He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up nine hits. He walked two batters and struck out two.

The Beach Bums got to Fowler early in the bottom of the first inning as third baseman Jose Vargas hit a two run home run after left fielder Brian Heere hit a one out single to give the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead. With two outs, first baseman Jeff Flagg hit a solo home run to give the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead.

The Beach Bums added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning off Fowler. Second baseman Ryan Still hit a RBI single with one out to give the Beach Bums a 4-0 lead. Third baseman Jose Vargas hit a sacrifice fly to score catcher Marcus Nidiffer to take a 5-0 lead. Finally, designated hitter Chase Burch hit a two run double to give the Beach Bums a 7-0 lead.

Fowler recorded two outs in the bottom of the third inning but loaded the bases for left fielder Brian Heere. Miners reliever Darrin Tew came in the game and got Heere to ground out to end the inning. Tew pitched 2.1 innings and gave up two hits and struck out one batter. The Miners didn't get their first hit of the game until a double by Chad Maddox off Beach Bums starter Jacob Clem in the top of the fourth inning.

The Beach Bums scored once again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Miners reliever Ryan Quigley entered the game and hadn't pitched since 7/28. He gave up five hits and three runs. He did record two strike outs. He gave up a RBI double to Chase Burch and a two run home run to Jeff Flagg, his second home run of the game to give the Beach Bums a 10-0 lead.

The Miners finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning as Carlos Mendez put a ball in play with two runners on base. Chad Maddox scored off an error by Jose Vargas to allow the Miners to get on the board 10-1. Will Block then hit a double and a RBI to make it a 10-2 game. Cannon Lester then grounded out to third to score Carlos Mendez to make it a 10-3 game. All runs were off Beach Bums starter Jacob Clem.

Beach Bums reliever Matt Miller pitched 2.2 innings in relief to close the door on the Miners. He struck out one batter. Miners reliever Reese McGraw made his Miners debut by pitching two shutout innings. He struck out five batters in his debut. The Miners lost 10-3.

The Miners have an off day on Monday and resume play on Tuesday at Rent One Park. A nine game home stand will get underway against the Rockford RiverHawks. First pitch on Tuesday will be at 7:05.
