CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Drew Rucinski struck out six over six innings as the Rockford RiverHawks snapped their worst losing streak of the season with a 5-1 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday at Standard Bank Stadium. The ThunderBolts took the opener, 8-4.
The RiverHawks salvaged the finale of a three-game series and snapped a six-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap.
In the opener, the ThunderBolts scored four runs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie. Zack Aakhus doubled in the go-ahead run and the "ËBolts tacked on three two-out runs, one on a single by Chris Wade and two on a Chad Cregar hit.
Windy City starter Dustin Williams (10-4) gave up four runs on six hits over five innings and got the win. Rockford starter Kyle Schepel gave up seven runs on nine hits and was out after four innings. Schepel (3-4) lost for the third straight start.
Rockford's Javier Herrera hit a first-inning home run.
In the nightcap, Rucinski (6-1) scattered a run on four hits and two walks over six innings for the win. Rucinski remained unbeaten in 11 starts since he went to the rotation in early June.
The RiverHawks broke a scoreless tie with a three-run third inning. Evan Button singled in two runs and later scored on a two-out infield hit by Jet Butler. In the fourth inning, Herrera singled in two more two-out runs off Windy City starter Blayne Weller. Weller (4-2) struck out seven, but gave up eight hits and was out after four innings in a losing effort.
The RiverHawks are off on Monday. They open a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Southern Illinois.
The RiverHawks' next home game is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, when they host Florence. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights with paid admission.
