Joliet Slammers News Release

Sunday, August 5- - 1:00 p.m. CT
Schaumburg Boomers Stadium - Schaumburg, IL
Game #72 - Road Game #36 (29-42), (16-19)
RHP #39 Tommy Mendoza (3-5, 4.58 ERA) vs. RHP #25 Alex Rivers (2-2, 5.14 ERA)
Last time out...
The Joliet Slammers (29-42) scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back as they blanked the Schaumburg Boomers (41-30) for the second straight night in a 5-0 win on Saturday. The game was delayed for an hour beforehand but that didn't bother the Slammers' offense. With one out in the first Brad Netzel and Abel Nieves smacked back-to-back singles. Then with two away, David Christensen drove a ball to deep right-center. Schaumburg outfielder Steve McQuail dropped the ball and two runs scored for Joliet. After that Jacob Sanchez (4-1) and the Joliet pitching staff took over. Sanchez threw six scoreless innings, scattering five hits, walking two and striking out five for the win. The Slammers added an insurance run in the fifth when Matt Mirabal scored on a Cameron Roth (8-5) wild pitch. Then they tacked on two more in the eighth on a Kyle Maunus two-run home run.
For Starters...
Tommy Mendoza has made two consecutive quality starts but has received a no-decision and a loss for his efforts. His last outing was on July 31 against Evansville as he went six innings, giving up only two runs. Evansville came back to win 7-3 against Joliet's bullpen. On July 26 against Schaumburg Mendoza received the hard luck loss as he went seven innings and only gave up two runs in a 2-0 defeat. He is looking for his first win since June 14. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
Locked down!
The Slammers' pitching staff has recorded three shutouts this season...all of them against the Boomers. Last night's 5-0 shutout joined their June 12 8-0 victory and their August 3 2-0 victory as their only shutouts of the season.
Going for the sweep...
With a win tonight the Slammers would sweep their second series of the year. Their last sweep of a series came against the Lake Erie Crushers in Avon, Ohio May 29-31.They must sweep this series to record a tie in the season series against Schaumburg as the Boomers currently lead the season series six games to five.
Walk this way...
Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 44 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 29 times in 240 at bats.
First inning success....
The Slammers have scored 50 runs in the first inning, most of any inning this season.
Leading after six...
Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 18-4 when leading after six innings.
Save me...
Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 17 saves in 18 attempts.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 9-30 in games when they make an error. They are 20-12 in games when they do not make an error.
