Johnson, Nachbaur Each Receive WHL Awards

May 4, 2011 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane Chief forward Tyler Johnson won the Brad Hornung Trophy as the league's Most Sportsmanlike Player and head coach Don Nachbaur took home the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as the league's top coach on Wednesday afternoon in the WHL's annual awards ceremony.

Johnson is the third Chief ever, first since Steve Junker in 1992, to win the league honor. Pat Falloon won the award in 1991. Johnson led the WHL with 53 goals this past season and finished second with 115 points. He was also +27 with 48 penalty minutes. Johnson finished as a runner up to Red Deer goaltender Darcy Kuemper for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the league's Player of the Year. Johnson signed a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in March.

Nachbaur became the first coach in league history to win the award with three different franchises. He had won it previously with Seattle in 1995 and again in Tri-City in 2008. In his first season in Spokane, Nachbaur led the Chiefs to a 48-18-4-2 record and 102 points, third all-time in franchise history for both categories. He now has 479 career wins, sixth all-time in WHL history. Bryan Maxwell is the only other Chief to win the award when he did it in 1992.

Kuemper also won the league's Del Wilson Trophy as top goaltender over Spokane 20-year-old James Reid, the Western Conference nominee.
