Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, have completed their coaching staff by naming former major-leaguer Jim Tatum as batting coach.

Tatum played parts of five seasons in the big-leagues with Milwaukee, Colorado, Boston, San Diego and New York Mets. He played in 172 major league games, including a career-high 92 for the Rockies in 1993.

In 14 minor-league seasons, Tatum played in more than 1,200 games with a .292 batting average with 152 home runs and 818 runs batted in.

"Jimmy Tatum has spent 19 seasons as a professional player hitting over 150 home runs," Wild Things' Manager Chris Bando said. "His experience and success will help our offense tremendously."

Tatum spent eight seasons in Class AAA, where he had a .320 batting average. His lifetime minor-league on-base percentage was .353.

He will be charged with helping to improve the Wild Things' offensive production, which was among the lowest in the Frontier League in 2011.

Tatum's major-league career ended in 1998 when he played in 35 games for the Mets.

Tatum, 44, is a native of San Diego and was the Padres' third-round pick in the 1985 amateur draft. He debut in the majors September 18, 1992 for the Brewers.

Tatum rounds out an entirely new coaching staff for the Wild Things that, in addition to Bando and himself, includes Lenny Randle and pitching coach Tim Ferguson.

The Wild Things open the 2012 season on the road, but will celebrate their home opener May 22-27 with Legends Week. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
