San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Lancaster starting pitcher Jose Cisnero struck out nine and allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings as the JetHawks posted a 6-1 victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Lancaster knocked out 12 hits and never trailed en route to the series-opening win. The loss snapped San Jose's winning streak at four games and dropped their overall record to 68-34.
Craig Westcott (11-3) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering five runs (all earned) on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out none during his stint on the mound.
San Jose mustered just four hits in the contest with Jose Flores (1- for-3, RBI) driving home the only run with a two-out single in the bottom of the third inning.
The JetHawks took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning against Westcott. Consecutive singles from Miguel Arrendell and Austin Wates started the game before J.C. Thompson's RBI groundout plated the first run. Then with two outs, David Flores stepped to the plate and lined a double to deep center field to score Wates with the second run of the frame.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the first putting a runner at third base with none out against Cisnero, but were unable to score. Gary Brown led off with a line drive double into left center and advanced to third on the play when the center fielder Wates bobbled the ball for an error. Cisnero though recovered to strikeout Jarrett Parker before Tommy Joseph popped out. Back-to-back walks to Ryan Cavan and Flores loaded the bases, but Cisnero induced Luke Anders to pop out to shortstop ending the inning.
San Jose broke through against Cisnero in the bottom of the third as Joseph singled with two outs before Cavan drew a walk. Flores followed with a sharp single into right field as Joseph scored to cut the Lancaster lead in half. However, Cavan was thrown out at third for the third out as he attempted to advance an extra base on the hit.
After neither team scored in the fourth, the JetHawks plated two runs in the top of the fifth against Westcott. With one out, Wates was hit by a pitch while Adam Bailey singled with two outs to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch moved Bailey to second and then Flores blooped a single into shallow center to score both runs for a 4-1 Lancaster advantage.
The JetHawks scored their final two runs of the night in the top of the seventh inning as after Westcott retired the first two batters of the frame, Bailey singled. A pitching change brought Ari Ronick (1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) into the game, but he promptly allowed a single to Flores. Jonathan Meyer then ripped a single to left plating Bailey and when left fielder James Simmons mishandled the ball for an error, Flores raced home with a second run.
Cisnero set down the Giants 1-2-3 in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He had retired nine straight hitters, including five via the strikeout, until Anders singled to leadoff the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Ehire Adrianza drew a walk to put runners on first and second, but new pitcher Kyle Greenwalt pitched out of trouble when Simmons lined into an inning-ending double play.
San Jose's only baserunner over the last two innings was a leadoff walk to Brown in the bottom of the eighth.
Notes: Lancaster out-hit the Giants by a 12-4 margin ... Brown (1-for-3, 2B) extended his hitting streak to eight games ... His first-inning double was San Jose's only extra-base hit of the game ... Brown also recorded two outfield assists throwing out Federico Hernandez at second base in the second inning and Hernandez again at the plate in the sixth ... Five of the six JetHawks runs scored with two outs in an inning ... Westcott has suffered the loss in back-to-back starts ... His career record with the Giants dropped to 17-3 ... In addition to Ronick, Jose Valdez (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) pitched out of the San Jose bullpen.
On Deck: The Giants and JetHawks continue their four-game series on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium with first pitch at 12:35 PM. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling (408) 297-1435 or by visiting www.sjgiants.com.
