San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Tommy Joseph, Nick Liles and Luke Anders each hit a two-run home run to lead the San Jose Giants to a 10-3 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Joseph's two-out homer in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Giants the lead for good while every San Jose starter picked-up at least one hit in the contest. The win improved the Giants' overall record to 69-34.
Anders (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Gary Brown (2-for-4, SB), Ehire Adrianza (2-for-3, 2 SB), Ryan Cavan (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Alex Burg (2- for-4, RBI, SB) each knocked out a pair of hits for San Jose while Joseph (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) drove home three runs. The Giants scored in their last five innings and finished with 14 hits.
After Lancaster scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game, San Jose responded in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Adrianza singled before stealing second base. Joseph was up next and he blasted a 2-2 pitch from JetHawks starter Zach Grimmett over the wall in left field for the go-ahead home run.
The Giants extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth sending all nine hitters to the plate and scoring three times. Burg started the rally with a one-out single before stealing second. After Anders grounded out, Liles belted a two-run home run to deep left on the first pitch of his at-bat. The home run was Liles' second of the season and pushed the San Jose advantage to 6-2. James Simmons then restarted the rally with a single and a stolen base. After Brown walked and Adrianza reached on an infield single to load the bases, Joseph drew a walk to force home the third run of the inning.
The Giants kept the pressure on in the bottom of the seventh with another two-run home run as Jose Flores drew a leadoff walk before Anders' ninth round-tripper of the season extended the lead to 9-2.
Lancaster plated a run in the top of the eighth as David Flores hit a solo home run before Cavan's two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the frame made it 10-3.
Tom Vessella (3-0) picked-up the win for San Jose with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Vessella entered the game in the top of the fifth with the Giants ahead by a run, but promptly walked Adam Bailey with the bases loaded and one out to tie the game 2-2. Vessella though recovered inducing the next batter, Flores, to bounce into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. Then after San Jose took the lead, Vessella pitched a scoreless top of the sixth inning working around a two-out single.
Jacob Dunnington (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) maintained his perfect ERA with the Giants by holding the JetHawks off the scoreboard in the seventh before Stephen Harrold (1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) allowed the Flores solo homer in the eighth. Jake Dunning (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then pitched the ninth to seal the victory.
San Jose took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Adrianza walked with one out, stole second and scored on Cavan's two- out double into the right field corner.
Lancaster tied the game in the top of the second against Giants starter Andy Reichard when Andy Simunic delivered a two-out, RBI double to deep center field.
Reichard didn't allow any runs over the next two innings before San Jose reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Flores led off with a double down the right field line and scored when the next batter, Burg, singled to left.
Reichard pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for the Giants and allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Grimmett (4-8) suffered the loss after yielding seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. It was Grimmett's third consecutive start with seven runs allowed.
