Nuts take Game Two

Alan DeRatt pounded the strike zone, and kept Bakersfield off-balance, as the Nuts took game two of a big series in Modesto, 5-1, over the Blaze.
Modesto drew first blood tonight, which has been a recipe for success for them in the second half. After a single by Angelys Nina to open the 2nd inning, he moved to second on a grounder, and with 2 outs, came in to score on an error. But the big inning in the game was the 4th.
Once again, Nina started the inning with a base hit to center off Blaze starter Curtis Partch (L, 6-11). Then, with Nina running, Jared Clark slammed a fastball into the gap in leftcenter to plate a run. Clark was sacrificed to 3rd, scored on a single, and after another base hit, a fielder's choice grounder gave the Nuts a 3-spot, and put Modesto up by 4.
The Blaze got 1 back in the 5th when Devin Lohman doubled in Alex Buchholz off Alan DeRatt (W, 4-3), but DeRatt continued to throw strikes, and worked 7 innings on just 81 pitches.
The Nuts added an insurance run off Jamie Walczak in the 7th, and Doug Salinas pitched a scoreless 8th, but the Blaze comeback fell a bit short. A pair of 1-out singles in the 9th forced Modesto to bring in closer Mike Marbry (S, 7), and he got the final 2 outs to preserve the Modesto lead.
