November 8, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release

On Saturday, November 10th, the Saskatoon Blades will add to the team builders' banner prior to puck drop against the Swift Current Broncos by honouring Jerome Engele, current Assistant Coach of the team.

Engele's name will be added to a group that already includes Jim Piggott, Jack McLeod, Nate Brodsky, and Daryl Lubiniecki. In addition, the team will honour all Saskatoon and area emergency services personnel, including representatives from the Saskatoon Police Service, Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services, St. John Ambulance, MD Ambulance, and the RCMP.

Jerome Engele began his association with the Saskatoon Blades in 1966 as a rookie defenseman with the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League team. He spent five seasons with the team, finishing with 263 Games Played, 3 Goals, 57 Assists, 60 Points, and 815 Penalty Minutes.

Following his time with the Blades, Jerome went on to play four full seasons of minor pro hockey before making his National Hockey League debut with the Minnesota North Stars during the 1975-76 season. He would play 17 games that year with the North Stars and parts of two more campaigns as a member of the North Stars. Jerome's final NHL statistics were 100 Games Played, 2 Goals, 13 Assists, 15 Points, and 162 Penalty Minutes. A noted pugilist, Jerome is said to have battled the likes of Terry O'Reilly, Dave "Tiger" Williams, Danny Gare, and current Red Deer Rebels Head Coach, Brian Sutter.

Following his playing career, Jerome returned to Saskatoon in time for the 1979-80 season to become the head coach of the Blades. After that season, Jerome would return to the team as an assistant coach from 1983-1997 and from 2004-present. The 2007-08 season marks his 18th year serving in this capacity.

The Blades also wish to salute Jerome on 25 years of service with the Saskatoon City Police Service, where he is currently an Inspector.
