Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager Roy Stasiuk announced the details this morning of a seven player deal with the Portland Winter Hawks. The Canes acquired 18 year old centre Colton Sceviour (SEE-vee-ur), over age winger Nick Hotson and 18 year old defenseman Lucas Alexiuk (uh-LEKS-ee-uk) in exchange for defensemen Travis Bobbee and Ryan Kerr along with forwards Nick and Jacob Dietrich.
The 5'11" 203 pound Sceviour is a 2007 draft pick (4th round, 112th overall) of the Dallas Stars. A native of Red Deer, Alberta, Sceviour had a strong 2006-2007 for the Winter Hawks tallying 38 p oints (12G, 26A) in 49 games. Sceviour is currently second in scoring for the Hawks this season, with 10 points (2G, 8A). Sceviour already has some ties to the area as his father Darin, is also a former Lethbridge Bronco.
"Colton Sceviour is a former first round bantam draft pick from the same 2004 class as Dwight King and Zach Boychuk" said Stasiuk "With this addition we feel we now have one of the most elite groups of 18 year old forwards in the league."
Hotson, a 6'5" 188 pound over age player is a veteran of over 200 WHL games and hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hotson was Portland's leading point getter in 2006-2007 with 40 points (18G, 22A) in 71 games. The 6'3" 193 pound Alexiuk, also a Winnipeg native, is playing his second season a nd became a staple last year on a young Portland blue line racking up four points (4A) and 85 penalty minutes in 67 games. Alexiuk is eligible for the 2008 NHL Draft.
Nick (88) and Jacob Dietrich (87) have been hardworking third line players this season for the Hurricanes. Jake, the older of brothers from Deloraine, Manitoba, is a strong veteran leader who was named the Hurricanes Alternate Captain at the beginning of this season. He is also a two time winner of the Hurricanes Joan Kobal Memorial Award for Sportsmanship and Perseverance.
Travis Bobbee (90), 6'0" 200 pounds, is a skilled young defenseman who developed entirely in the Lethbridge system. Bobbee was the Canes number one draft pick (15th overall) in the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft. He tallied 10 points (5G, 5A) in 41 games last season and already has five points (2G, 3A) in his fi rst 18 games. Bobbee is currently out of action with a shoulder injury which should see him miss the next 2-4 weeks. The 6'2" 210 pound Ryan Kerr (89) is a former number one draft pick of the Prince George Cougars in the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft. Kerr racked up 238 penalty minutes in 125 games as a Hurricane.
"Each of these players are strong, character individuals who we have had the pleasure of seeing develop both on and off the ice here in Lethbridge" says Stasiuk "Though we know we are giving up a lot, we feel that we are gaining quality players in return and wish Jake, Nick, Ryan and Travis the best of luck in their future endeavors."
