Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (24-14) erased their third deficit in the seventh inning or later in that last four nights against the Jupiter Hammerheads (21-17) to sweep their four game series on Monday night. Two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled Dunedin to a 6-4 victory.
RHP Justin Shafer started strong against the Hammerheads by striking out six batters through the first eight he faced. A hit batter, infield single and RF Junior Sosa double in the third though put Jupiter up 2-0.
The Jays countered in the bottom of the inning with four straight hits off starter RHP Jeff Brigham. The fourth was a RF Jonathan Davis double that plated a pair, putting Dunedin up 3-2. The lead did not last long as 1B Taylor Ard tied it with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Both starters allowed three runs over five innings.
In the sixth, DH Brad Haynal singled off RHP Adonys Cardona with two outs, scoring LF Dexter Kjerstad to give Jupiter a 4-3 lead.
Dunedin's response came in the seventh, doing all of their damage with two outs. 2B Jorge Flores walked which yanked RHP Andre Rienzo from the game. RHP Jose Adames (L, 1-5), who blew the save on Friday night, relieved him. CF Anthony Alford collected the second of his three hits with an infield single to third, narrowly beating the throw to first. After Alford stole second, SS Richard Urena put the Jays ahead with a sharp line drive single to right field past the glove of Ard at first.
Jupiter's best chance to tie the game came in the eighth when the first two runners reached against RHP Conor Fisk (W, 6-3), who tossed a scoreless seventh but was then lifted for LHP Colton Turner (S, 8). With no one out, Haynal squared to put a bunt down and whiffed when C Danny Jansen threw behind Kjerstad at second. Kjerstad was caught leaning a bit too far and thrown out for the first out of the inning. Turner then struck out Haynal and SS Rony Cabrera to end the threat.
Alford singled in an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and Turner shut down the Hammerheads in the ninth to seal the 6-4 win and series sweep.
Dunedin enjoys an off day on Tuesday before a home-and-home with Clearwater. First pitch on Wednesday at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium is at 6:30 PM. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
