Clearwater Threshers News Release
Facing an 8-1 deficit late, the Clearwater Threshers rallied to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth inning but finished short of a comeback on Monday, falling 11-6 to the Fort Myers Miracle in the series finale at Hammond Stadium.
Josh Tobias and Zach Green each turned in three hits as the Threshers pounded out 14 total. Tobias, who joined Clearwater from Lakewood on Wednesday, is batting .478 across his first six games.
The Threshers (24-14) are now tied with the Dunedin Blue Jays for first place in the Florida State League North, while the Daytona Tortugas sit 1.5 games back.
It was Clearwater who broke open the scoring in the second on Monday, when Chace Numata led off with a single, and later crossed the plate on a Malquin Canelo infield hit.
The Miracle (20-18) quickly bounded back against Elniery Garcia (9-3). After loading the bases on a triple and a pair of walks, Daniel Kihle singled home two runs to put Fort Myers ahead. Nick Gordon knocked in two more with a single to right to make it 4-1.
Fort Myers broke it open in the middle innings, plating a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
It remained 8-1 until the seventh.
Canelo got it going with a leadoff walk, and Herlis Rodriguez followed with a double to left to put two men in scoring position.
Carlos Tocci then lined a single to right to score Canelo, before the Miracle called upon Nick Anderson to relieve starter Keaton Steele (5-9). Tobias greeted him with a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-3 game.
Clearwater cut it even closer in the eighth. Green led off with a double, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Canelo brought Green in with an infield hit, and Rodriguez followed with a single to left.
An out later, Tobias notched his third hit of the ballgame, this time scoring Canelo on a grounder up the middle. Jiandido Tromp's knock to right brought in Rodriguez, slicing the deficit down to two.
The Miracle managed to pull away again with three unearned runs against Victor Arano in the eighth, making it an 11-6 ballgame.
After an off day on Tuesday, the Threshers will battle the Dunedin Blue Jays in a matchup of the top two teams in the Florida State League North. The series begins in Dunedin on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app starting at 6:15 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
