Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - Chase Jaworsky and Anthony Sherwin both trotted around the bases for the first time in their professional career Wednesday, connecting for critical home runs in a 4-2 win over the Charleston RiverDogs (2-3). The game was scheduled for an early 11:05 am first pitch for Education Day, as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (4-1) welcomed schools from around Cumberland County inside Segra Stadium.
Jaworsky started his multi-hit day at the plate with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning that scored Oliver Carrillo for an instant 1-0 lead.
Charleston recovered quickly and grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third as Raudelis Martinez singled off Raimy Rodriguez to drive home Wooyeoul Shin. Rodriguez struck out three and walked three while working into the fourth inning. He handed the ball over to Colby Langford (W, 1-0), who retired all five Charleston bats he faced. Langford has not allowed a hit or run across three appearances over the first five games of the year.
Jaworsky, the 2023 fifth round pick out of Rock Canyon high school in Colorado, delivered again in the fourth, starting the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall off Andrew Lindsey. It was the first home run of his pro career in his 13th career game. In the fifth, Anthony Sherwin connected for the game-winning swing against oncoming reliever Drew Dowd, a soaring two-run home run to left field that capped the 4-2 final.
James Hicks emerged from the Fayetteville bullpen in the sixth inning and commanded the game the rest of the way. In his Single-A debut the former South Carolina Gamecock pitcher spun four scoreless innings, including a seventh inning in which he struck out the side in order. The righty worked around a one-out walk in the ninth, retiring Adrian Santana with a rollout to lock up Fayetteville's third straight win.
The six-game home series continues on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM. It's Thirsty Thursday and 80's night at the ballpark. Fans can enjoy discounted drinks and are encouraged to dress in their favorite 80's attire.
