Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Another day, another extra-inning win for the Baysox.

Javy Lopez, who joined Bowie today to begin a rehab assignment, drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the twelfth inning. Three hours and 46 minutes after the first pitch of the game, Peter Bergeron crossed the plate to give the Baysox a 5-4 victory over Norwich in front of 5,486 at Prince George's Stadium.

It was Bowie's third extra-innings game in its last four contests.

The Baysox (48-49) took three of four from the Navigators and lead the season series, 5-1.

Bergeron led off the twelfth with a single to right and moved up to second on a bunt single by Brandon Fahey. Fahey was erased on a fielder's choice hit by Ramon Nivar, but Bergeron advanced to third. Lopez then lofted a fly ball to right and Bergeron made it in just under the tag of catcher Chris Curry to score the winning run.

"Being able to hit that line drive to right, that makes my day," Lopez said.

The Orioles' catcher will spend the weekend rehabbing with the Baysox. Lopez started the night as the designated hitter and went 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of singles and two RBI. Afterwards he said he felt no pain in his right hand, which was broken on May 24.

"The hand feels great," he said. "It hurt a little during batting practice, but once the game started it felt fine."

The same could not be said of Hayden Penn at the outset. The Baysox pitcher gave up three runs in the top of the first, though he could not shoulder all of the blame. The Navigators started the game with a pair of singles to put runners at the corners. Penn struck out Dan Ortmeier, and then had Kevin Frandsen picked off first with Carlos Valderrama at the plate.

The Baysox botched the rundown, however. When Fred Lewis took off from third, Fahey neglected to tag Frandsen and threw across the diamond. The ball hit Lewis as he dove back into third base and it rolled towards the outfield. Lewis came home and Frandsen moved all the way to third on the error.

Valderrama plated Frandsen on a groundout, and Eliezer Alfonzo followed with a solo home run to deep left that gave Norwich a 3-0 lead.

Alfonzo drove home another run in the fifth with a double off Penn.

The Baysox got back into the game with three runs in the sixth. Nivar and Lopez each had RBI singles, and Tripper Johnson added a sacrifice fly to cut Norwich's lead to 4-3.

Bowie tied the game with two outs in the seventh, as Bergeron scored on a wild pitch by Norwich reliever Matt Palmer.

Despite Lopez's heroics in the twelfth, the Baysox probably could not have won the game without the efforts of Chris Piersoll (3-0). The reliever picked up his second win in as many games by pitching the final four innings, during which he gave up just one hit. Infielder Joey Hammond, who already has two pitching appearances this season, was warming up in the top of the twelfth.

BAYSOX NOTES: The Baysox rapped out 13 hits - all singles...Bergeron, Fahey, and Nivar all had three hits...The bottom of the first inning ended on a rare double play. With Fahey on second, Nivar at first, and Lopez at the plate, Baysox manager Don Werner called for a double steal. But the runners took of before Pat Misch went into his windup, and the pitcher threw over to third. Fahey retreated back to second while Nivar continued toward the same destination. Norwich second baseman Kevin Frandsen tagged Fahey, the swiped to his left to apply the tag to Nivar.

ON DECK: After playing 37 innings of baseball in three days, the Baysox will enjoy a well deserved off day on Thursday. They return to action on Friday as they welcome the Binghamton Mets to town for a three-game series. LHP Richard Stahl (0-4, 4.14) will face RHP Yusmeiro Petit (4-2, 2.93) in the opener. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
