B-Mets Game Notes

Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Close, But No Victory Cigar

The Binghamton Mets battled back from a 5-0 deficit and pulled to within 6-5, but weren't able to topple the New Britain Rock Cats, who prevailed 8-5 at NYSEG Stadium last night. New Britain scored runs in each of the final five innings to keep Binghamton at arm's length. Mike Jacobs went 3 for 5 with a triple and a homer and Brett Harper added two hits, including a two-run shot, for the B-Mets, who lost their third straight and have dropped 13 of their 17 July contests.

Swinging The Bats

Over their last five games the B-Mets are hitting a robust .306 (53 for 173), scoring 29 runs. The offensive surge comes after Binghamton began July 2-10, hitting a mere .203 while averaging just over three runs a game.

Going Deep

Jacobs' solo shot last night was his 19th homer of the season, extending his career high. The slugging first baseman/catcher has a chance to become the first B-Met to hit 20 homers in a season since Rob Stratton (29) and Earl Snyder (20) did so in 2001. Matt Raleigh holds the single-season club record with 37 homers in 1997.

‘Pen Not So Mighty

After a six-game stretch that saw them allow two earned runs over 18 innings, the B-Mets' bullpen has struggled, allowing 12 runs, 11 of them earned, over their last three games, spanning 10 1/3 innings (9.58 ERA). In none of those innings has the ‘pen retired the side without allowing a baserunner.

They All Write Funny Too...

Last night, New Britain starter Errol Simonitsch became the latest lefty to beat the B-Mets. Binghamton's now lost six straight and nine of the last 10 games in which a southpaw started against them and they haven't beaten a lefty starting pitcher since they bested Mike Connolly June 7th at Altoona. The B-Mets are hitting .259 against lefties and .270 vs. righthanded pitching.

On The Mound

RHP Ken Chenard (7-7, 4.79)

Last Time Out: Fri. vs. REA (W): 5 1/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K (W 6-4)...Ken gave up a run in the first on Jim Deschaine's RBI single and another in the second on Chris Roberson's homer. Another run scored after he left the game with two on and one out in the sixth. Ken allowed baserunners in every inning except the fifth, but still won for the third time in four decisions.

This Season: Ken has gone at least five innings in each of his last four starts and in six of his last seven. In 19 starts this season, the righthander's yielded three earned runs or fewer 16 times, including seven times in his last eight outings. Ken's allowed a team-high 14 homers this season and has given up exactly one longball in each of his last three starts. Ken's walked three or more five times, accomplishing the feat in his last two outings, walking six in 11 1/3 innings over that span.

Against New Britain: Today, Ken's making his third start against the Rock Cats. He beat them June 29th at NYSEG Stadium, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks, striking out five in five innings of a 10-6 B-Mets win. Outfielder Doug Deeds had three of New Britain's five hits. Chenard left his start June 23rd at New Britain after facing just two batters - walking Tommy Watkins and hitting Ben Pattee - with a right forearm strain. Ken didn't figure in the decision in Binghamton's 10-2 loss.

Background: The Victorville, CA native is in his seventh pro season after being selected by New York in the 46th round of the 1998 draft out of Fullerton (CA) Junior College. Last season, he tied for the B-Mets team lead in wins, going 9-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 27 games, 17 of them starts.
