South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, announced today that former player and coach Jared Bednar will be inducted into The Post and Courier Stingrays Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 31 on Fan Appreciation Night at the North Charleston Coliseum during the first intermission of the Stingrays game against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m.
Bednar skated in 279 games with the Stingrays over six seasons (1995-98 and 1999-02) totaling 22 goals, 73 assists and 794 penalty minutes and dressed in 54 postseason contests earning 15 points (2g, 13a) and was a member of the 1997 and 2001 Kelly Cup championship teams. The Yorkton, Saskatchewan, native moved behind the Stingrays bench as an assistant coach from 2002-07 before being named to the head coaching position on April 27, 2007. In two seasons as head coach, Bednar led the Stingrays to an 89-45-4-5 record and a Kelly Cup championship in 2009 and became one of only two individuals to win three ECHL titles. He would then be promoted to the American Hockey League, first as an assistant coach with the Abbotsford Heat (2009-10) and is now as the head coach of the Peoria Rivermen.
"I cannot think of another former player or coach who is more deserving than Jared," said Stingrays President Rob Concannon. "His contributions on and off the ice are a big reason for the success of our organization."
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman began his professional career with the Huntington Blizzard of the ECHL registering 78 points (21g, 57a) in 155 games. Prior to turning pro, Bednar skated four seasons of junior hockey with the Saskatoon Blades, Spokane Chiefs, Medicine Hat Tigers and Prince Albert Whalers.
Bednar joins Nate Kiser, Julie Thoennes, Jason Fitzsimmons, Jerry Zucker, Brett Marietti, Dave Seitz, Ed Courtenay, Kirk Daubenspeck, Concan-non, Rick Vaive, Mark Bavis and Brad Dexter in the Stingrays Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Stingrays continue a five-game road trip tonight, Tuesday, March 27 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:35 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center and return to the North Charleston Coliseum for Fan Appreciation Night and The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night on Saturday, March 31 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m.
