A helicopter will drop candy on the field to kick off Toy Story Night along with a plastic army falling from the sky. Plus, slinky dogs and curly fries will be available to purchase from the concession stands along with Woody and Jessie from "Toy Story" in attendance at the ballpark. On a Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday, families are welcome to play catch on the field before the game, plus Jumbo Shrimp players will be signing autographs. Each Sunday also features free face painting, balloon animals and popular kids show and movie characters roaming the park. In addition, 25 oz. Corona cans will be available for $5. The Jumbo Shrimp are also asking fans to donate toys for One More Child in part three of the club's A Better Jacksonville Series.
CHAVEZ, MILLAN LEAD JACKSONVILLE TO 8-2 WIN
Santiago Chavez and J.C. Millan each homered on Saturday to propel the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to an 8-2 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits. Millan's RBI double in the second inning represented the game's first run. Later in the frame, Stone Garrett scored on a wild pitch and John Silviano lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Montgomery plated a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to get within 3-2. However, Chavez clubbed a three-run shot to extend the lead to 6-2 in the seventh. Millan added a two-run bomb an inning later to make it 8-2 in favor of Jacksonville. Kolton Mahoney fired 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save.
POTWEET DECK
Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Cody Poteet came into his start on April 25 with a 5.06 ERA. In the seven starts since then, however, the 24-year-old has seen that figure plummet to 2.67. Poteet, who was named to the South Division All-Star team, has surrendered just 11 runs, nine earned, on 33 hits in 44.2 innings over his last seven outings for a 1.81 ERA. During that span, he has fanned 27 against seven walks. Interestingly, Poteet's success this year has not come by missing a lot of opposing bats. Of the 113 pitchers who have compiled at least 20.0 innings in the Southern League this season, Poteet has the seventh-lowest strikeout rate (15.2 percent) and 22nd-lowest swinging-strike rate (9.8 percent). The former UCLA Bruin comes into his Sunday start against Montgomery ranking 10th in the circuit in both ERA (2.67) and WHIP (1.10)
THE MILLER'S TALE
Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller saw his 16-game hitting streak, the best run in all of Double-A this season, come to an end in Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola. Still, the Raleigh, N.C., native has reached base at least once in 19 of the last 20 games, going 27-for-78 (.346/.407/.423) with four doubles, one triple, nine RBIs and eight walks during this span. On the season, Miller ranks sixth in the Southern League with 59 hits. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is pulling the ball at a career-high 48.0 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 20.3 percent of the time, the fourth-lowest such mark of the 124 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances this year.
MORE LIKE A.C. MILAN, AMIRIGHT?
Jacksonville infielder J.C. Millan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs on Saturday, becoming the first Jumbo Shrimp player to register three extra-base hits in a game all season. Over his last 10 contests, Millan is a sizzling 15-for-36 with four doubles, one long ball, 10 RBIs and five walks for a .417/.488/.661 batting line. During these 10 games, the 23-year-old has seen his wRC+ rocket up from 25 to 97.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR
Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 8-24 (.250) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-11 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost six of their last seven affairs decided by no more than two runs. Not helping matters is the club has also not performed well in "blowout games," which are decided by at least five runs. The Jumbo Shrimp are just 3-11 in those blowout situations.
MEN OF STEAL
Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 37 men stealing, tied for the second-highest such mark in all of Minor League Baseball. Jacksonville's 44.6 percent caught stealing rate ranks third in Double-A. Individually, Santiago Chavez is tied for fifth in the minors with 22 runners caught stealing in just 38 attempts.
SHRIMP SKEWERS
Coming into Saturday, Jacksonville had not hit multiple homers in 2019. Santiago Chavez and J.C. Millan had not even gone yard all season, and ironically, the last dinger each hit in their careers was on August 10, 2018. Those zealous notes are courtesy of ShrimpGraphs... After yearning for better starting pitching, courtesy of a 5.44 gigantic ERA in the first 20 games of 2019, the Shrimp have received great performances recently from their starters. In the club's last 42 contests, Jacksonville starters have turned in a 2.82 ERA (76 ER in 242.2 IP)... Brian Miller has zoomed for 10 steals this year, tied for ninth in the league.
