Barons, BayBears Split Sunday Twin Bill

MOBILE, Ala. - Nick Madrigal delivered five combined hits in the doubleheader as the Birmingham Barons (27-37) split a Sunday doubleheader against the Mobile BayBears (23-37) at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Madrigal, who has delivered a multi-hit effort in all three games since his promotion from Class-A Advanced Winston-Salem on Thursday, tallied three in the opener and two more in the nightcap to help the Barons earn the split.

GAME 1 - Despite three hits apiece from Madrigal and Blake Rutherford, the Barons dropped Game 1 of the five-game series by a 10-2 final.

Mobile scored three times in the third after a pair of scoreless frames to take the lead. The BayBears extended their advantage with another run in the fourth, two in the fifth and broke it open with a four-run sixth.

The loss spoiled a sound offensive performance from the Barons, who tallied 11 hits in the game. Madrigal (RBI-double) and Trey Michalczewski (RBI-single) provided run-scoring base knocks.

Ti'Quan Forbes reached base three times in the loss.

Barons right-hander Lincoln Henzman (L, 0-2) suffered the defeat after he allowed six runs (five earned) in five innings of work.

BayBears right-hander Jeremy Beasley (W, 3-3) managed to limit the damage despite surrendering all 11 hits and collected his third win of the season.

GAME 2 - Madrigal furthered his impressive day at the plate with two more hits in the nightcap.

The White Sox No. 4 prospect also scored twice and added one RBI as Birmingham emerged with a 7-4 win.

Luis Robert uncorked a leadoff home run, his fourth at the Double-A level, to set the tone and give the Barons an early lead. Madrigal followed with a stolen base and later came around to score via an RBI-single from Gavin Sheets.

Madrigal's swipe of second marked his 20th stolen base of the season combined between Winston-Salem and Birmingham.

Sheets, meanwhile, holds a .350 clip at the plate with 14 RBI across his past 10 games. The 23-year-old first baseman entered Sunday's twin bill riding a season-high nine-game hit streak, but had it snapped in the opener.

Luis Gonzalez's two-RBI double in the fifth represented the eventual game-winning hit as Birmingham's trio of relievers - Kodi Medeiros, Danny Dopico and Zack Burdi staved off Mobile's comeback effort.

Medeiros (W, 1-8) snapped a stretch of 16 consecutive appearances without a win since he joined the White Sox organization from Milwaukee in exchange for Joakim Soria on July 26, 2018. The 23-year-old southpaw and former first-round selection logged 3.2 innings of work in relief of spot starter Mauricio Cabrera and allowed two runs. He struck out four batters.

The right-handed Dopico lowered his season ERA to 2.67 with a pair of scoreless frames, while Burdi (SV, 2) locked down his second straight save with a 1-2-3 seventh.

BayBears right-hander Isaac Mattson (L, 0-1) suffered the loss in relief.

Birmingham and Mobile will continue their five-game series Monday night as the Barons send left-hander Matt Tomshaw (2-1, 1.17) to the mound against right-hander Luis Madero (3-3, 3.50).

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. CT at Hank Aaron Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
