BISCUITS DROP SHRIMP DESPITE DUNAND HOMER

Joe Dunand homered on Monday, but the Montgomery Biscuits eased by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 9-4 from the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Biscuits jumped out to a lead in the third inning on an RBI double from Brett Sullivan and two-run homer from Tristan Gray. Montgomery tacked on two more in the fourth on David Rodriguez's RBI triple and Jermaine Palacios' RBI ground out. The Jumbo Shrimp got on the board in the bottom of the frame on a Dunand sacrifice fly. Another Rodriguez RBI triple and Palacios RBI single in the sixth got the tally to 7-1 before Dunand's two-run shot in the bottom of the frame. Justin Twine's RBI triple in the seventh drew Jacksonville within 7-4, but a Jumbo Shrimp error in the eighth plated two Biscuits and widened the gap to 9-4. Robert Dugger yielded five unearned runs in five innings.

THE MILLER'S TALE

Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller saw his 16-game hitting streak, the best run in all of Double-A this season, come to an end in Thursday's doubleheader in Pensacola. Still, the Raleigh, N.C., native has reached base at least once in 21 of the last 22 games, going 31-for-84 (.369/.424/.452) with five doubles, one triple, nine RBIs and eight walks during this span. On the season, Miller ranks in a tie for fifth in the Southern League with 61 hits. The former North Carolina Tar Heel is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.5 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 20.4 percent of the time, the fourth-lowest such mark of the 125 Southern League hitters with at least 70 plate appearances on the year.

TWO PEAS IN A POD

Jacksonville infielder J.C. Millan went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs on Saturday, becoming the first Jumbo Shrimp player to register three extra-base hits in a game all season. In the same contest, Santiago Chavez blasted a three-run home run, marking the first time all season Jacksonville crushed multiple long balls in one game. Millan, in particular, has been on a tear of late. Over his last 12 contests, the 23-year-old is a sizzling 16-for-43 with four doubles, one long ball, 10 RBIs and six walks for a .372/.449/.535 batting line. During these 12 games, Millan has seen his wRC+ rocket up from 25 to 94.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 8-25 (.242) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 0-12 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost seven of their last eight affairs decided by no more than two runs. Not helping matters is the club has also not performed well in "blowout games," which are decided by at least five runs. The Jumbo Shrimp have posted a 3-12 record in those blowout situations.

THOU SHALT NOT STEAL

Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 38 men stealing, tops in Double-A and second in all of Minor League Baseball behind the Modesto Nuts' (High-A, Seattle Mariners) 39. Jacksonville's 44.2 percent caught stealing rate ranks fifth in Double-A. Individually, Santiago Chavez is tied for fifth in the minors with 22 runners caught stealing in just 38 attempts (57.9 percent).

IT'S NOT HOW YOU START

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 44 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.71 ERA (77 ER in 255.2 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 75 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 211 (7.4 K/9) and yielded 207 hits (7.3 H/9).

SHRIMP SKEWERS

Jacksonville has dropped seven of their last eight games. The club's 40 losses equal their total in each of their last four first halves (through 2015). Jacksonville's worst first half in recorded club history (through 2005) came last season, when they finished 28-40 (.412)... Sixto Sanchez, who starts on Tuesday against Montgomery, surrendered a career-high 11 hits to the Biscuits in his start against them on May 19... The Jumbo Shrimp have five of their 20 homers in June.
