Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp play at the Mobile BayBears in Sunday's 7:05 p.m. ET contest. RHP Kolton Mahoney (1-0, 3.18 ERA) starts for the Shrimp against Mobile RHP Luis Madero (4-5, 4.55 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM, TuneIn and JaxShrimp.com.
BAYBEARS EDGE JUMBO SHRIMP 4-3
Joe Dunand and Riley Mahan each collected a pair of hits on Saturday, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were topped by the Mobile BayBears 4-3 from Hank Aaron Stadium. J.C. Millan broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the fourth inning. Brandon Sandoval's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth cut the Jacksonville lead to one. In the fifth, a Jack Kruger two-run base hit put Mobile ahead. In the eighth, Corey Bird scored on a passed ball to tie the score at three. However, in the bottom of the frame, Zane Gurwitz's RBI base knock put the BayBears up 4-3. In the ninth, Jacksonville was able to put the tying and winnings runs on base, but Dario Beltre was able to wiggle out of the jam for his sixth save.
TRENDS SET
Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team expects to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have posted a combined 17-32 (.347) record in games determined by two runs or fewer. Interestingly, Jacksonville lost their first 12 affairs decided by exactly two runs before winning their next six two-run games. The Jumbo Shrimp, though, have lost a pair of two-run contests in a row. Of Jacksonville's last 25 games heading into play on Sunday, 18 have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Jumbo Shrimp have won 10 of these 18 contests.
'PEN PALS
The Jumbo Shrimp bullpen finally saw their scoreless innings streak come to an end at 21 in the ninth inning on Friday at Mobile. That roll came right on the heels of a 14-frame scoreless streak that was snapped with an unearned run on Sunday. Thus, Jacksonville relievers went 36 frames in a row without yielding an earned run. Over the last 23 games, Jumbo Shrimp relief pitchers have tossed 81.1 innings with just nine runs, eight earned, for a 0.89 ERA. During this 23-game span, the Jumbo Shrimp's bullpen has collectively surrendered just 41 hits (4.5 H/9) while whiffing 87 (9.6 K/9) against 25 walks (2.8 BB/9). A big part of the success for Jacksonville relief pitchers has been their ability to retire first batters; on the season, the club's bullpen has retired 75.2 percent of first batters faced, several ticks above the baseball-wide average that hovers around 70 percent.
A TALE OF TWO HALVES
Jacksonville went into play on June 13 with a woeful 25-41 (.379) record. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 13-8 (.619) since that point behind some dominant pitching. In the 21 games since June 13, Jacksonville has surrendered the fewest runs (65) and hits (138) of any Double-A club. The Jumbo Shrimp also place first in Double-A in WHIP (1.06) and batting average against (.205), sixth in ERA (2.95) and tied for seventh in both strikeouts (195) and walks (60). During this 21-game run, Jacksonville has gone four sets in a row without a series loss, their best such roll since winning five straight sets from August 4-30 of the 2017 campaign.
NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE
Jacksonville infielder Joe Dunand came into play on June 9 with a dormant season batting line of .209/.275/.262. However, in the 25 games since then, the Miami native is for 27-for-88 at the plate, slashing a robust .307/.384/.443 with nine doubles, one home run, six RBIs and 10 walks. A product of N.C. State, Dunand has dropped his strikeout percentage from 29.7 percent with Jacksonville in 2018 to 22.6 percent this year. However, in a not necessarily encouraging trend, his ground ball rate has shot up from 32.4 to 43.8 percent.
MILLER HIGH LIFE
Jacksonville outfielder Brian Miller has reached base at least once in 38 of his last 42 games, going 53-for-165 (.321/.374/.412) with 11 doubles, two triples, 14 RBIs and 13 walks during this span. On the season, the Raleigh, N.C., native ranks in a tie for fourth in the Southern League with 85 hits, tied for eighth in doubles (17), tied for ninth in stolen bases (14) and 11th in batting average (.283). A former North Carolina Tar Heel, Miller is pulling the ball at a career-high 47.6 percent clip while going the opposite way a career-low 22.0 percent of the time, the seventh-lowest such mark of the 135 Southern League hitters with at least 80 plate appearances on the year.
