Jacks To Raise Funds For Paralyzed Football Player
November 16, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Odessa Jackalopes News Release
(Odessa, TX) - The Central Hockey League's Odessa Jackalopes are using their November 19th game vs. the Texas Brahmas as an opportunity to raise funds for a Permian High School football player who suffered a spinal injury in practice earlier this year.
Permian Head Coach Gary Gaines, along with other school officials, will be on hand at Thursday's game in support of John Julio Rangel - an offensive tackle who suffered severe trauma to his spinal cord during a team practice. Rangel has been confined to a wheelchair after losing all feeling from the waist down.
"The Permian Panthers are a major part of this community," said Jackalopes Senior Vice-President Dave LaCouture. "(Rangel) is a kid who suffered a terrible injury playing a sport he loves, and we just want to get involved and help out any way we can."
Rangel, who will drop the first puck against the Brahmas, is the brother of Jackalopes volunteer assistant equipment manager Alex Rodriguez.
A portion of the tickets sales from Thursday's game will be donated to the family of Rangel, along with proceeds generated from raffles. If anyone would also like to contribute a donation, the Community Complex Credit Union has set up a special account for the Rangel family.
For more information on the event, or to make a donation, please contact Dave LaCouture with the Jackalopes at 432-552-7825.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team is in the middle of their 13th season in the Permian Basin. Season tickets, mini-plans, and single game tickets are available by calling (432) 552-PUCK or visiting jackalopes.org.
