Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
Sioux City, Iowa - The Muskegon Lumberjacks pushed the defending Clark Cup champions to their limit, but fell 3-2 to the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the Tyson Events Center Friday evening.
The game was the second of three in as many days for Muskegon (2-1-1) at the United States Hockey League Fall Classic. The Jacks improved to 4-0-1 at the most intensely scouted hockey event over their two years as members of the USHL. They'll finish off both the event and their exhibition schedule when they face the Green Bay Gamblers at 2 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
Trenton, Mich., native Josh Henke put the Jacks up 1-0 when he collected a shot by defenseman Kevin Schulze that found its way through Gabe Antoni's equipment. Henke scooped up the loose change behind the netminder and plugged it home for his second goal of the exhibition slate. Defenseman Alex Smith had the secondary assist.
The Fighting Saints (4-1-1) drew even twice in the second period. After Lawrence Cornellier's redirect goal knotted the score at 1-1 early in the middle frame, Joensuu, Finland, native Joona Manninen picked up a rebound goal off a shot by Alex Smith, who placed his shot perfectly off the right leg pad of Antoni. Manninen had most of the net to work with as he scooped up the loose change and cashed in from a low angle. But Max Gardiner scored with the man advantage to tie things up 2-2 just before the midway point of regulation.
After a scoreless third period and four scoreless rounds of shootout, Ryan Bullock converted to force Gerard Hanson to convert in order to continue the shootout. He did so, and John Doherty scored in the last of the fifth round to seal the win.
The Jacks finished 1-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. Muskegon netminder Paul Berrafato stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced.
