Brockton Rox News Release

Little Falls, NJ (July 1, 2007) -- New Jersey Jackal DH Sandy Madera hit a game-winning two-run HR off Rox closer RHP Ryan Burnau in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Jackals to a 4-3 win over the Brockton Rox in the finale of a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox took a 3-2 lead with a clutch single by C Jason Radwan in the top of the eighth inning but could not hold the one-run lead in the ninth. RHP John Kelly tossed seven gritty innings against his former team and left with the lead, allowing two runs on nine hits over seven innings. The Rox fell in the series two games to one and now are four games under .500 at 16-20.

The Jackals plated a run in the third inning on an RBI single by LF Jud Thigpen against Kelly. Veteran RHP Joel Bennett made his first start of the season for the Jackals and held the Rox to one run on just two hits in five innings. In the fifth, the Rox tied the game on a 3B Eugene Julien suicide squeeze, scoring SS Fredy De La Cruz, who doubled to open the inning.

In the seventh, CF Joe Hough had a two-out double, and scored three pitches later on Julien's RBI double to the left-center field gap. The Jackals got the run back on a clutch two-out hit of their own by 1B Clyde Williams against Kelly in the bottom of the frame. Kelly gutted his way through seven innings on 145 pitches, walking three and fanning six but allowing just a pair of runs in his sixth quality start of 2007. Facing Jackal RHP Hunter Davis in the eighth inning, LF Jeremy Coronado and DH Guye Senjem drew walks, setting up Radwan's two out run-scoring single to right. The Rox held a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth after RHP Ari Kafka pitched a scoreless eighth frame.

Burnau walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth, and after a sacrifice bunt, Madera crushed a 2-1 pitch over the center-field wall, setting off a wild Jackals celebration at the plate. The Rox continue their road trip tomorrow in Sussex County, NJ as they take on the Sussex Skyhawks with RHP Gary Galvez (1-4, 4.06 ERA) taking the ball for Brockton.
