Long Balls Lead Cutters Past Quebec

WEST HAVEN, CT - CF Ervin Alcantara (6) and DH Henri Stanley (2) each contributed two-run homers and southpaw starter Brad Whitworth (5-2) pitched 8.0 solid innings to help the New Haven County Cutters defeat le Quebec Capitales, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at Historic Yale Field in the final game of a three-game series.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Alcantara's two-run shot made it 2-0.

The Caps came right back in the fifth to tie the game with a RBI single from 3B Jjallil Sandoval and a RBI groundout from second baseman Boomer Berry.

But 1B Chris Gaskin's RBI double and left fielder Kevin Whiteside's RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth inning put the Cutters on top for good, 4-2.

Stanley increased the Cutters' lead to 6-2 in the seventh inning with his two-run blast.

Whitworth allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out six to win his fourth straight game and fifth in six starts.

Caps' starter RHP Jorge Perez (3-4) allowed four runs on four hits and walked six in 5.0 innings and took the loss.

RF Scotty Martin went 2-for-4 for the Caps with a double and a run scored.

The Cutters took two of the three games against the second place Caps in the weekend series.

The Cutters are idle on Monday and return to action Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the North Shore Spirit at Historic Yale Field. Game time is 7:05 pm.

RHP Brain Brainer (0-1, 4.26 ERA) gets the start for the Cutters.
