Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- Once again the Tornadoes received outstanding pitching, but for the second straight night, the bats were silent as the Atlantic City Surf outlasted Worcester, 3-2, in 13 innings to win the rubber game of the three-game series at Hanover Insurance Park.
The game began as an outstanding pitchers duel between Worcester righty Junior Guerrero and lefty Brian Rodaway of the Surf. Neither team could score as Guerrero allowed just 5 hits in 7 shutout innings and Rodaway gave up just 3 hits in 8 shutout innings. With the score tied 0-0 in the bottom of the 9th,the Tornadoes had a chance to win it, but pinch-hitter Keith Beauregard lined out to center with the bases-loaded and two outs to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 11th, Josh Renick led off with a single off Chris Shank and was sacrificed to second base. He took third on a long flyout by Anthony Granato (whose league-best 28 consecutive games on-base streak came to an end) and scored on a clutch two-out single to right by Rob Fischer to make it 1-0, Atlantic City. Closer Matt Pike came on for the save, but Chris Colabello singled with one out and Patrick Perry moved him to third one out later with another single. Andrew Wishy then came through with a single to right to score Colabello and tie the game at 1-1.
The Tornadoes had a chance to win it in the 12th, but left two more men on base. Worcester stranded 13 on the night. In the top of the 13th inning, wildness continued to plague Eddie Pena (3-2) and he hit Renick with the first pitch he threw and then walked Lucas Taylor. The two executed a double-steal, and both runs scored when third base,an Euvi Solano was unable to handle a good throw from catcher Yohanny Valera. A walk and a single followed, making both runs earned as the Surf took the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 13th. Back to back one-out singles for Patrick Perry and Andrew Wishy and a walk to Keith Beauregard put the tying and winning runs on base but Kevin Brower got Jeff LaHair hit into a fielders choice (scoring Perry) and Josh Beauregard struck out with the tying and winning runs in scoring position to end it.
Matt Pike (1-0) picked up the win despite the blown save and Pena (3-2) took the loss. Brower earned his first save of the season. The 13-inning game was the longest of the year for the Tornadoes, both in number of innings and in time of game (3:54). The Tornadoes have Monday off, and then will get right back at it Tuesday night, as they host the Nashua Pride for the first of a three-game series at Hanover Insurance Park. Righty Reid Willett is scheduled to start for Worcester. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
