Jackals split double header with Spirit in night and day performances
July 5, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals played well in game one and followed it up with a poor performance in game two, as they split a doubleheader with the North Shore Spirit.
Jackals took game one by a score of 7-4, despite numerous comeback attempts by the Spirit.
For the second consecutive game, the Jackals took an early lead with runs in the first inning. A groundout by Wilton Veras scored Jason Tuttle, while Bill Peavey collected an RBI single, to put the Jackals ahead 2-0.
Vic Davilla's solo homerun in the bottom of the first slashed the New Jersey lead in half.
But the Jackals added to their lead with two runs in the third and three in the fourth. Veras and John Lindsey both tallied RBI singles in the third. In the fourth, Jason Belcher pushed two across on a single, and two batters later, Bill Peavey added an RBI base knock of his own. Through four complete, the Jackals held a 7-1 lead.
North Shore scored two in the bottom of the fifth, including a J.D. Reininger solo homerun, and added another run in the seventh, but they left the bases loaded to end the ballgame.
Spirit starter Jarrad Lavergne got the loss in 3.1IP. He surrendered seven runs, five earned, on seven hits, while walking three and fanning one.
New Jersey reliever Jason Wylie picked up the win.
Game two was a much difference story. Their bats were baffled by Bryan Morse, and fell 9-1
The Spirit touched up New Jersey's Aaron Myers in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Jeff Brooks, followed up by a two-run blast by Alex Trezza put the Spirit on top 3-0.
They added two more runs in each of the next three innings, to take an enormous 9-0 lead. In the third, two RBI singles by Chris Rowan and Andrew Wishy did the damage. In the fourth, BJ Weed scored two on a single. The scoring surge ended in the fifth when Garrett Weird singled in a run, and Weed collected his third RBI on a sacrifice fly.
New Jersey finally got to Bryan Morse in the sixth, but only managed to do a bit of damage. Guillermo Reyes drove in Bryce Kartler on a bloop single to right field. It was the only run scored for the Jackals in the game.
Bryan Morse was amazing. He allowed only one earned run on three hits. He walked none and struck out three.
Aaron Myers struggled, and suffered the loss. He allowed seven runs, six of them earned, on 11 hits.
