D.J. dominates, Tornadoes shut out Pride

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER, MA-After banging out a season high 12 runs on 18 hits against Nashua last night, the Tornadoes continued their assault on the Pride pitching staff, knocking starter Dan Reichert out of the game after only five innings of work. The team would finish the night with seven runs on 11 hits.

However, while it certainly is a good sign that the Tornadoes' offense is starting to heat up, the story of the game was the pitching performance of D.J. Mattox. Mattox carried a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and allowed only one hit over seven innings. Locating his fastball and mixing in an array of off-speed and breaking balls, Mattox did not allow a Pride base runner to advance beyond second base. He finished the night with four strikeouts and two walks. Mattox also received some help from his defense, as the Tornadoes made several outstanding plays in the field, highlighted by Austin Wasserman's diving stab of a hard hit ball up the middle in fourth inning.

Worcester got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning. After Tucker Frawley was retired on a ground ball to second base, Wasserman lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a base hit. Reichert then proceeded to walk the next two hitters, Josh Beauregard and Chris Colabello. With Reichert struggling to settle down, Onix Mercado worked the count full before lofting a double that landed just beyond the outstretched glove of the first basemen, scoring Wasserman and Beauregard. The third Tornado run of the inning would come off the bat of Keith Beauregard, who lifted a pitch to deep left-center, good for a sacrifice fly and his 15th RBI of the season.

Reichert dug himself into a deeper hole in the bottom of the third inning when he drilled Colabello. With Colabello on first base, Keith Beauregard laced a ground rule double into the right-center field gap. Following Beauregard, Miles Page fell behind in the count 0-2 before delivering a single back through the box, driving in Colabello and Beauregard.

With Mattox mowing down the Pride, the Tornadoes touched up Reichert for an additional run in the home half of the fifth. Leading off, Mercado reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop and then advanced to second on a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Keith Beauregard. Stepping up to the plate with two men on once again, Page got a hold of a pitch that drove the right fielder onto the warning track and allowed Mercado to tag up and reach third. With runners on the corners, Jeff Lehair battled back after falling into a 0-2 hole, fouling off six pitches to even the count to 2-2 and finally drove the 11th pitch of the at-bat to left for a sacrifice fly. Although Reichert was able to stop the bleeding, recording all three outs on fly balls, the fifth inning would be his last of the night.

The Tornadoes would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eight, as after retiring the leadoff hitter, Pride pitcher Jamie Baker walked Wasserman, who come around to score on a sharply hit single by Colabello.

Dallas Mahan would shut the door on the Pride, pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

With the win the Tornadoes push their record to 21-17, picking up a game on second place North Shore, who dropped the first game of a doubleheader. Having won the first two games of the series, the Tornadoes will be looking to break out the brooms, as staff ace Junior Guerrero (6-2, 1.72 ERA) takes the hill. He will be opposed by the Pride's Vincent Davis (2-2, 1.88 ERA).
